Hi, I didnt realise that you had to purchase a number plate when buying a car in Canada. I thought it was like the UK and the car came with the number plate. How does this work? |

If not for Ontario you go to the local DVLO office. The link explains all in an indirect way. I expect its the same everywhere else, but each province probably has its own site too. http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/ |

Re: Buying number plates
Go to One Stop vehicle licenceing they will get you insurance a driving licence and a number plate. A plate for a full year cost about $79 but the price reduces if your not buying a full year. For example our plates due to our surname get renewed in Feb, we bought plates in May last year and paid about $50.

In Ontario the system is "plates stay with the owner" and if you sell a car, you KEEP the plates, for the next car that you buy. A transfer of the plates ( paperwork ) to a newly bought car costs $10 My 2005 Chevrolet 2 litre optra costs me $74 a year for the validation sticker that goes on the rear plate in the upper right hand corner, so Police can check it from behind. They are also reflective and different colours for different months of the year. Plates are re-newed on YOUR birthday, each year. Should be easy to remmber, right ? Jim Bunting. Toronto. |
