Buying household goods - Calgary
 

Hi all, I've just moved to Canada and trying to set up home. I didn't bring much household items with me from UK so kinda starting afresh. I am gonna need to buy a lot of things so I'm sure I'll be coming here often to seek advices from you kind people who have already settled here in their new lives. I have no idea where are the best places to buy household goods at best prices so first of the series I need some recommendations about kitchenware. I'm after some non-stick (preferably Anodized Alluminium) cookware and other essential utensils etc. Can anybody please suggest to me where is the best place to buy them in the calgary area? And where can I get the best deals on prices etc. I really appreciate your help :)

i've used Canadian Tire for a fair bit of my kitchen stuff...keep an eye out for things going onto special offer though, my stainless steel pots and pans were reduced from $699.99 to $179.99!

things like spatulas, wooden spoons etc i've just gotten from Walmart as and when I realise i need them :lol:

Ikea has some nice pots and pans at reasonable prices. Also, Winners / Homesense can be good, too but can be a bit hit and miss. They do get some nice quality stuff though and some things that are a bit different.

Canadian Tire is probably as good a starting point as anywhere - take their "sale" prices with a pinch of salt though. Also have a look at Walmart, Canadian Superstore, Costco and Ikea. It's all much of a muchness. If anything looks too junky in any of those stores then Homesense/The Bay probably has a nicer/more expensive version.

Could also try Target which had now just opened up in Calgary.

Depends on the quality you want. Pots and Pans, we bought Paderno Fusion 5. No non stick, but they don't stick and will last a lifetime. Costco the cheapest and often best place to buy. I have not, in 20 years had one good shopping experience at Canadian Tire. If it was the last store on earth I would go without. Home Hardware also have sales on some kitchen ware, incl Paderno.

Sears and The Bay, so long as you buy on sale, otherwise over priced. Sales every other weekend or more. There is also house of knives for, knives and cutlery. Homesense also does a reasonable range (owned by The Bay). Lots of specialty stores in the malls as well.

If you see something in these stores, and you like it, buy it. If you hesitate and you come back tomorrow or next week, it'll be gone, and you won't see it again. :)

Thank you very much everybody. I will look at online catalogues and pop into the stores that you have recommended (after I locate them where they are in Calgary :)) and see what I can get.

Dollarama can be good for stuff too. Things lije utensils, baking pans tin openers etc.

Buyzing/computertrends can be good for a lot of stuff too,picked up a stainless pot and pan set for $19.99 on saturday,and some other cheap bits and bobs.
Got myself a belter of a stainless Tefal 12" frying pan today,and a bloody nice glass kettle from Target,they also have towels on offer atm $3.99 for a bath towel or 2 hand towels(I paid $24 per towel in sears a couple of weeks ago!)

When we were evaluating Canadian locations my company was offering one of my wife's main questions and sticklers was how close was nearest Ikea.

I certainly feel like our house is sponsored by Ikea at times however their stuff is stylish (in our opinion), very affordable (at least in UK) and they cover a huge range of items.

Aviator...you and I are at one, I really don't like Canadian Tire. It just isn't a pleasant shop.

OP certainly garage sales on a Sunday are a good idea too. Just look in Kijiji in the week and they give a list of sales at the weekend. At the end of May here, 1,000 military families are being moved, so we have some tremendous bargains at the moment...I just bought a brand new, boxed Magimix for $20. Lots of Small electrical goods for the kitchen. Best of luck.

I'd agree with Piff for the little suff - go to dollarama and Walmart and then use Crappy tire for your bigger purchases. (Mixers / pans etc)

I have only been to Target(s) in the US, but I like them. Somehow they seem to be a step up from (what was Zellers) and the dreaded Wal-Mart. They have a good range of merchandise, mostly at the value end. Do report back after your visit to Targét !

We went to Target in Market Mall in Calgary last week and were disappointed considering all the hype. It felt like a cross between Zellers and Walmart. :unsure:
