Buying furniture in U.S and crossing Canadian border - help!
Hi everyone
My husband and I landed in Toronto last week and will be living here for two years as my husband has transferred with his firm.
We are renting an unfurnished apartment so we have been furniture shopping the last few days, I really love a sofa on the Urban Outfitters website but they don't ship large furniture to Canada.
If I ordered it from the Buffalo store and picked it up does anyone know what the procedure would be at the border coming into Canada?
Are we allowed to spend a certain amount in the U.S without being taxed and what would the customs charges be?
Thanks for your help,
Tallie

If you're over the limit you will have to pay GST + PST + Duty (if not made within North America).

We have brought a few furniture items over but not the size or cost of a sofa. We weren't charged duty etc as we had been away for a few days and the costs fell within the allowed amounts . (I'm talking bathroom vanity units and bedside tables and bits and bobs).

Border services may want to take a look inside of it to see you are not packing anything you should not.
