Indeed. The is a Canada wide phenomenon. Tax is collected every-time a vehicle (car, truck, boat, rv, atv, motorcycle - essentially something you have to register with the provincial govt) has a transfer of ownership. Buying from a dealer or a private seller makes no odds in this regard. It is usurious tax on tax but, like the Canadian winter, bitching about it will change nothing. :-)

Minivans are less fashionable and more practical than SUVs, there might be a better bargain to be had on, say, a Dodge Caravan.

Well, yes but then you are driving a Dodge Caravan. Even the softest of offroader minivan's masquerading as a SUV is better than that.

I appreciate the fine calibration of your discernment and am delighted that I have no need to learn to detect such subtle differences.

I'm highly comfortable with my Hyundai Santa Fe XL (The XL is the important part). It is a mighty offroad steed, why it even has hill descent control and will tow 5000lbs. That it has a third row of seats (like a minivan) which prove useful in carting kids and friends around is entirely coincidental.

I shall doubtless wish I had one of those whenever I have need to attend a cheese rolling event at which all the participants have died and the cheese needs fetching in a trailer. Today, not so much.
