Buying a car - any advice?
We've just come over to Nova Scotia, following the family route (however long it is going to take) and staying with my mum who is dual nationality but quite ill and needs our help with general running around and household tasks.
We need to buy a car, checked out the insurance and want to get a car in cash, no finance or anything.
We've looked at the car dealers (includes inspection and warranty, but expensive, the wholesale market (cheaper but how would you get an inspection if you don't know any mechanics?) or even buying from auto trader.
Has anyone got any advice to share?

Vehicles Purchased Privately
If a "used vehicle" is purchased privately the vehicle must display a valid Motor Vehicle Inspection issued within 30 days prior to the date of sale in the name of the seller, showing a two (2) year expiry date for a “type 1 vehicle” or one (1) year expiry date for a “type 2 vehicle” from time of inspection; OR
A valid Motor Vehicle Inspection sticker must be obtained by the buyer prior to transfer; OR
The buyer may obtain a letter from the Registry of Motor Vehicles, at the time of transfer, providing an additional 10 days to obtain a valid Motor Vehicle Inspection.
However, if the seller and buyer complete a “Sale of Vehicle Not Safety Approved” form, a vehicle permit may not be issued until a valid Motor Vehicle Inspection sticker is obtained in name of the buyer.

So Nova Scotia does vehicle inspections...good, just need the provinces that don't bother to sort their act out. No vehicle inspections required in Alberta, when you see some of the heaps on the road, you realise why there are so many accidents.

You may find the Wiki article useful Car Buying-Canada : British Expat Wiki and also this web page: https://novascotia.ca/sns/rmv/registration/
Do you have status in Canada (i.e. visitor record, work permit or similar) to enable you to get a NS Drivers license? If you don't, you may be restricted on how long you can drive on your UK license. https://novascotia.ca/sns/paal/rmv/p...#appprocessgp4 and https://novascotia.ca/sns/rmv/other/id_req.asp. You can obtain a visitor record from the border, if you don't have any other status.
Visitors or Newcomers who have a valid driver's licence from another part of Canada, or from another country, can drive in Nova Scotia for up to 90 days without getting a Nova Scotia Driver's Licence. After that, you need a Nova Scotia licence.

And the vast majority of accidents here are caused by people driving too fast for the conditions and/or too close to the car in front.
