Buying a car - advice needed please
 

Hi, we are in UK due to fly out on 4th Sep, we have managed to secure finance through scotia bank at 6.25% with 40% down.

We are dealing with a VW branch in London and are looking at a 2010 Tiguan which is on for 23775 they are offering us a little over 450 off the screen price.

Can any tell us if this is the normal amount? Here in the UK we would haggle down and down but we seem to have reached the end here and they are not budging - it is so hard - the car looks good but...... Not being used to the Canadian way we have no idea if this is a good buy or not,

Any help would be greatly appreciated - we have looked around and it seems a good price for a Tiguan with less than 70000kms on it, but just not sure if the deal is good enough - how much do they normally discount for what is essentially a cash sale?

There are a few threads on negotiating car prices, and some good advice on additional fees, but the bottom line is how much you want the vehicle vs. how much they want to sell it..... Do a search and see what prices you can find on similar vehicles.
We bought a convertible in the middle of winter so were able to negotiate a good discount but the car we bought when we first moved was in limited supply so less chance to haggle.

Isn't your answer there? If it is well priced they will be confident they can sell it to someone else if you don't buy it. Just make it clear that, once you have agreed the price, HST is the only extra that you will pay. Any fees or levies on the sales contract will have to be deducted from the price.

I agree with JonboyE. If it's a good price already, why do you think they will move any lower? If you really want to save a lot more money, look into buying something in the US and importing it into Canada.

don't get sucked in with extra fees and levies and especially a 'documentation charge' as much as some dealers will tell you it is mandatory, i have never paid one yet. i make an offer in writing, the 'final price' plus sales tax which includes all fees and levies.

London is a lousy place to look for deals on a motor vehicle...you will not get a good deal there, unless you buy used.

I am not familiar with that model so I have no idea as to their pricing. That being said, in general $450 is bugger all of a discount on a used car. I would haggle and be prepared to walk away (I have in the past and will do so in the future no matter how much I might like the car). They need to understand that there are other dealerships you can shop at so they are not the only game in town. They need the sale more than you need to buy from them. Go to the GTA if necessary as dealerships are a dime a dozen and must compete for the business.

And also remember, the majority of the extra fees they will claim are mandatory, cannot be waived, etc. are all B.S. and are nothing more than a way to nail you for more money. Refuse to pay them and if they do bot budge, walk away and go elsewhere.

You have to be a right arsehole at times but it is your money so go right ahead and be an arsehole.

That sounds like a terrible discount IMO. Admittedly I have only purchased 2 vehicles here but both I negotiated 10% of the sticker price. Also is it really such a good deal? I did a search on Kijiji Toronto and the first one that came up was a 2009 with only 54k on the clock for $17,998 which makes your $23,775 sound terribly over priced.

The next one I come across is a 2010 with 41k on the clock for $20k though that is private. I then stopped looking as I am already convinced the deal you are talking about is not a good one :p

VMR Canada are suggesting the retail price of a 2010 should be between $17,625 and $22,600 depending on the trim level.
