BT Openreach engineer looking to emigrate

Hi there!

Right, I am sooo sick of england! So I have applied for a Working holiday Visa for Canada, I am wondering what the job opportunities are (pref Vancouver) good companies to work for? best salary etc? I do fibre work, copper repair overhead and underground jointing, I've been with BT for 3 years, and love working on telecoms so would ideally carry on doing this, but obviously with it being a WHV I dont HAVE to find a job in this role.

if anyone could point me to any links or if anyone wants to offer me a job it'd be really appreciated!

Thanks Oink! I went travelling 4 years ago for a year, and just havent settled since I came home! Finally pulling my finger out and doing something about it :-)

I'm hoping I can get a job in telecoms and then get them to sponsor me

I can't really help you with employment advice only to say the bloke who hooked up our cable tv and internet was from Malaysia and he drank three cups of tea and ate all my biscuits. :(

Hi there.
The main telecom company in the west (BC & Alberta) is Telus. They will not sponsor you or offer employment unless you are a PR.
However there are 2 companies that contract to Telus, doing installation & repair work. These are LTS (Ledcor Technical Services) and ATI telecom.
I'm not sure about LTS, but ATI would be interested in your skills and would apply for a TWP to get you over here. There are several ex Openreach guys working for them and they actively recruit from the UK.
Be aware, as a contractor you will work all weekends and stat (bank) holidays. You get 2 days off in the week.. After the first 3 months you go onto piece work for you pay. You would get issued test tools, a vehicle laptop & cell phone. But you have to provide your own hand tools and things like tone sets.

I started out working for ATI but moved over to Telus as the working conditions and family life is better.

If you need any other info, let me know. There are a few ATI guys that are on here, they may come on and tell you more.

That should preclude Canada. You realize its one of the most boring and dull places on earth with the added bonus of crap weather?
