Have just struggled down my fields to feed horses and we have branches down all over the place, just small ones so far, but the wind is really strong, on the way back up to the house it was much easier, it was pushing me along...:)

Joking apart - how do you manage the cold? Is it a matter of 'Grin and Bear It?!'

I have yet to experience the Ontario cold. It is incredibly mild here, down south in the UK - the crocuses and daffodils are out. Apart from the odd bit of snow in Vancouver and the odd few days when it gets cold here in the UK, I think I have had it good.

Does everything that Canada has going for it compensate for the Arctic like conditions that most of it seems to endure? Convince me!

Houses and offices are warm, cars are warmed up at night by plugging them into the mains. At -40C and below you avoid going out as much as possible, and at any kind of low temperature you wear warm clothes.

Blizzards in the UK is a relative term...it usually means about 2 cm of snow and 'arctic' temperatures of -3 c.

I was 'oop north' a few years ago in January and about 5 cm of wet sloppy snow ground M/CR to a halt.

Brrrr: Canadian cold snap grounds airplanes


Temperatures of -42 forced Air Canada Jazz flights in and out of Yellowknife to be cancelled.

A spokesperson for the airline told CBC News that the Bombardier regional jets used on Jazz flights to and from the Northwest Territories' capital are not certified to operate at or below –40 C.

A cold snap early this week sent temperatures plunging below –30 and –40 throughout much of northern Canada, including all of the Northwest Territories.

Daytime temperatures in Yellowknife reached a high of –37 on one afternoon. Environment Canada is forecasting much of the same for the rest of this week.

How many passengers were stranded is not known but some waited in line to rebook flights that may be able to take off today.
