British traned physio therapist- wants to work in British Columbia
 

Hi folks

Right thanks for the help with my other topic, now I need some info for getting the better half some work when we arrive for our working holiday,

My girlfriend is a physio and we are wondering if there is any movement in the working regulations or if she can work under supervision as the recognition prossess seems to take a year to go through by which time we will be coming home.

If anyone has any informations at all on this it would be a great help.

Hi, my OH is a physio and I hate to say it but unless she has passed at least the first half (written component) of the competency exam, had her UK degree officially recognized and been registered in BC/ given a license to practice she will not be able to work.

If she has completed all that she will be able to work under supervision but it is usually on the proviso that she has booked to do the second half of the exam. Although the boundaries for this are usually set at the provincial licensing level not by the Canadian Alliance.

Physio is very regulated here and you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get a license to work. It also costs a fair amount too.

Try giving the BC physio licensing people a call and see what they advise.

Hi,

I am the "other half" and also a Physiotherapist, working in Vancouver (at VGH). Where in BC does she want to work?

The short answer is yes she can work under supervision without having sat the exams, but she will have to find someone to sign all the documents from the college to supervise her.

BUT she will have to have gone through the credentialling process with the alliance first to get an interim licence from the college to be able to practice at all. I am not aware that she can work without doing any of this.

We recently had someone in our team go through this process and then sit the exams later. I think (but may be wrong) that you have to have an exam booked?

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. I am sure you have looked at the alliance and college websites but you can always give them a call for clarification of anything.

Just a side note, if your other half wants to work in a hospital, she will most likely need to be prepared to be a casual employee first as seniority is huge in getting a job. Again it will depend which hospital and where in BC. If she works in musculoskeletal, then she would need to work in a clinic and I'm afraid I don't know the process or feasibilty of this.

hey that's great thank you, we are looking to go to Vancouver and see how we get on there, it all just depends how much money we can earn as I need to sit the red seal exam to work as an electrician and she needs to to do all that to practice as a physio, so we could both end up working in bars so we might have to go somewhere cheaper if that's the case.

Can you tell me how long it took them to credentialise your qualifications as the website says 6 weeks to a year and she may as well not bother if they cant be more specific than that as we are only going to be there a year.

Unfortunately it took them about 5 months to do mine. That was back in 2004 though. I'm not sure how you can tell how long it will take them. They did come back with questions for mine and I had to supply additional information ( that I thought has already been included but a specific letter from the Uni was needed).

If you are recently qualified and fairly equivalent it may be easier than if you have qualified 20 years ago and the course content is quite different...just a guess??

When do you plan to come over?

I come over in Jan she will follow on in feb she's 26 and specialises in muscloskeletar
and hand therpy and is currently a senior 2.

We were thinking she may get a job in a gym possibly where they may pay her slightly more
than usual because of her skills, but she is really unsure about having a year off work so we
are hoping we can make something work, did you manage to book into do your written exam
easily enough?

It could come through in time then or just a month or so in to your visit.

The written exam is easy to book and runs every couple of months I believe. It does cover a broad range of specialty areas so some reading may be in order. It is a majority of musculoskeletal though which will be better. I am in neuro and had quite a bit to look at.

Sorry its taken me a few days to get back to you, thankyou very much for your help I think we are going to contact the credentialising agency and see if there is any way we can get some assurances of them that they can get things through inside 5/6 months
