british DVD's

Hi
Anyone know whether DVD's from UK work in Canadian DVD players? Sounds daft but I've had someone tell me to leave them at home(UK) and someone -else tell me that you can buy a DVD player (more money) that plays them in Canada.
Thanks

I bought a DVD at Wall*Mart for $39 that I would play any DVD with a region-free hack I found on the internet. It was a Diamond Vision but do a search on this forum as I'm sure this has been answered before.

Think we paid $30ish for our DVD player, Diamond vision from Walmart. Plays our English DVD's just fine. We have just brought an entertainment system for our new house (move feb 2nd :D ) and the DVD player was under $200 and that will play UK DVD's as well.

So...Does it play the DVD on the Canadian DVD player onto a Canadian telly?

tv's in north america work on the NTSC format and those in Europe on PAL. You will need to have a tv that works on both formats. A lot of new LCD and Plasma tv's this is standard.

Then just get a dvd player that is either mutli region or do a google search for a hack. They are usually very easy to do, involves pressing a few buttons on the remote control. Somewhere like www.videohelp.com or do a google search for 'multi region hack for x' and input your make and model.

I bought one of those the other week, a white model, looks like a 1970s alarm clock at first glance. Played all R2s straight out the box except 1 Cbeebies one which it won't play at all. I think I paid 23 CAD + tax so I'm not complaining :)

No good if you want to play MP4s, VCDs or whatever though.

we managed to change the settings on the phillips dvd we brought from england , the kids had been playing it on a uk tv , but we now use a canadian tv and it works fine , but an odd thing , hubby bought a canadian dvd player and spent 3 days trying to play uk dvd's on it with a plasma tv , no joy and it did say multi region , then our son came in , ( not at all mechanically minded or slightest interest in how things work ) shoved a dvd in and it played immediately , when i saw it playing , his was reply was , i did not even think about it i just stuck it in !!!!

the only thing we have no surround sound with the uk ones:scared:

You need one capable of playing DivX or XviD for that.

Comes in very handy for playing stuff downloaded from the internet.:)

Cheers

Thats odd. Region encoding should have no impact on surround sound. e.g. if your Uk (Region 2) disc has Dolby 5.1 on it then you should get surround sound when played on a multiregion dvd player. (Assuming of course that it is connected to an AV receiver and speakers!!)

Absolutely right. I bought one recently for that very purpose and it's also multi-region straight out of the box. Walmart $40.

We've been in Canada 10 weeks now and brought alot of British DVD's with us. We broke the bank and bought the Max DVP6100 by GTech for $29.99 out of Best Buy. It works a treat and no codes required. Just slammed in a DVD and it worked perfectly.

Try www.dvdreviewer.com all you need to do is find the make and model of your DVD player and you will get a code to punch in on your remote and your DVD with the play all regions.

Thanks again, it's little things like this that are not always easy to work out that you guys help with (now where did I put season 5 of 24 in the packing!)

Yup! ... Without reading every post above, I'm sure you have had good feedback, so bring along those British DVD's ... you will be able to play them here on a Multi-Region DVD Player (more readily available than when I arrived in Canada back in 2002!)
