Default British driving licence

Has anyone, after giving up their British licence for a Canadian one, got another British one after?

i.e. told DVLA they lost it and had a replacement?

How do you explain to DVLA about the Provincial MVB informing the DVLA that you exchanged your UK license for a Provincial one? In most instances they do inform the DVLA.

Yep. They know. I had some contact with the DVLA a couple of years ago, and they knew I had exchanged here.

Also, would you be willing to accept any U.K. tax consequences of making such declaration? In effect you are telling the U.K. government you are living in Britain (or your declaration is false) and this may impact your tax residence and domicile situation.

Why would you want to do that?

It's really quite simple to get a new Brit DL, especially if you have a record of your original license #.

There are a number of threads on BE relating the experience of several members who legitimately hold more than one DL.

Holding a Brit DL, will not, in itself, engender tax residency issues. It may cause questions to be asked, but if one's affairs are legit, no problem.

It's better to get a replacement DL before moving here then hand over the replacement one for the Canadian DL, keeping your original.
I've had a motorbike licence for 35 yrs but when I swapped in Canada, lost that entitlement, now when I go on holiday I cannot rent a motorbike anymore.
I didn't expect Canada to give me that entitlement but didn't know Canada takes your UK DL.

Why? What's the point in holding a replacement in a country where it has no relevance/use?

There's a very easy solution, just take your test.

As a resident here, you've no need for a UK licence. It shouldn't matter.

It has a relevance and use for me.
I need a motorbike licence to rent a motorbike when on holiday abroad.
I don't need a UK licence for Canada.
And I'm not going to go through the expence & hassle of taking a test again when it is only for holiday purposes.

You can't use a UK licence here if you're resident, so it has no relevance. You have an Albertan licence to legitimately use on trips abroad.

It's too much hassle to take a test, but renting/riding a bike is important to you? - put aside a day to get your Albertan licence. If it's not important, why mention it?

Essentially you want a UK licence for nothing more than your own convenience and laziness - the legal consequences are apparently irrelevant.

If you are resident outside the EU (e.g. in Canada) you can't show an EU driving licence when renting a vehicle. If you had an encounter with the local constabulary you'd be open to a charge of driving without a valid licence.

Where I go on holiday, you just slip the local constabulary 200Baht, they pocket it with no receipt and wave you on your way.
Dixon of Dock Green it isn't.

Fairy Nuff. If they don't ask for a licence in the first place, why the fuss?

Just Phuket.

the Alberta motorbike test is a joke anyway...if you have the ability to turn on a motorbike and not fall off it then you'll pass it...

i got marked down on my test for doing "too many" shoulder checks...
