I've never been asked when crossing the border in either direction and have done it very many times. Of course, we have the paperwork to hand just in case. The bigger problem is that at some crossings you have to leave the dog in the car while going in for secondary inspection; if it's hot and you're gone for several hours that doesn't do the dog any good.
