Oh blimey, all booked to fly out next on 27th Dec, which means I can have Xmas dinner with the family and get over the hangover before departing.

Booked 19 nights in a hotel, I hope I find a nice apartment during that time! I booked a return trip, as the cost of a one way or long open return flight was around £1,000 alone. So when I get to immigration I know I will have to explain that I am not intending to return but that is was a cheaper option.

Read posts about not being covered during travelling, so I was planning on booking travel insurance for the 19 day period and then getting my medical cover for 3 months from that date. Not decided who with yet but does that sound like a sensible idea?

Once you cash in your visa and land, travel insurance could have a reason not to pay out as you are effectively saying in resident not traveling at that point....even if you are staying in a hotel.

Just make sure you are clear about the fine print, it seems some companies are offering dual intent insurance, others are more picky about the details.

There was a really recent post (in the last week?) with details...but it didnt pay out for a dental problem on the flight here....

Suggestion from Wiki was CanadaSure, their website stats:

One-way trips and emigration are NOT normally covered under standard travel insurance policies and may not cover persons undertaking employment. Insurers of these types of plans may refuse to pay out claims if you are not returning to your country of departure. Furthermore you may be repatriated back to your country of origin/departure for treatment.

They have an additional coverage titled En route, which I will assume for now (although I will read it fully before buying) means whilst in transit. I did read about the person who developed toothache during the flight and then the insurance company wouldn't pay up. I work in Insurance, so I know its all covered in the small print!
