Default Blacks to close all stores in August

All Black's Photography locations to close in August | CP24.com

I thought it worth posting, as knowing where to go to get photos taken is something that would be needed by some, plus given the differences in requirements for the photos, always handy to have somewhere that *does* know about the differences.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii totally interpreted the title another way at first before I realized you were talking about the photography store...!

It's unfortunate, but not surprising. Unfortunately their services did remain quite expensive, I remember going there to get some photos printed and being horrified at the price, ended up taking them to Costco instead for half the price, literally. The stuff they sold as well in terms of cameras etc wasn't really competitive to other places, they always seemed to be higher... but as you said, sharkus, nice to know that there was somewhere that had knowledgeable and friendly staff...

I was trying to figure out where else to go, someone reminded me about Shoppers Drug Mart, and now I'll add Costco to my list too.

For me it would be normal pictures I'd want printed, which is a rare thing, hence why I can never think of somewhere to go and get them printed out!

There are tons of online options as well, a friend of mine uses Shutterfly... just upload pics, select printing size, order, they show up in a few days.

I've done photo printing at Costco, it's a decent system, not too different from the one Blacks had with the screen thingie, but at far better prices.

I think WalMart and some Superstore locations also have photo printing services. Both certainly have passport services and I usually assume photo printing services falls in the same bucket.

We went to Blacks to get ID stuff done when we landed- it was eye watering. Have used shoppers since but it's only on the rare occasion these days.

Yeah, I agree, the prices were a little painful when I got the passport photos done earlier this year.

On the other hand, they said they'd take another set for free if they screw up. For Canadian passport photos, just about anywhere should do; I think I got mine at Walmart on the way to the passport office.

I'm not surprised to see them go, given the demise of photo processing and the ease with which you can buy photography gear online these days--not just in Canada, but from US stores often at significantly lower prices--but they did seem to know what they were doing when taking photos to peculiar specifications.

The Walmart close to me does photographs. Can't speak for them all.

When I had my last PR card photo taken, Black's was the cheapest in my area at the time, neither Wal-Mart, Shopper's or Sears could beat the price.

I didn't have Costco nearby so no clue what price they would have been.

I paid 14 something, Wally Mart wanted 19 something as did Shoppers and Sears wanting an eye watering 30 dollars.

I just had to Google Black's 'cos I couldn't remember seeing them around here for years ...............

I tried 3 cities in BC under their Find a Store, including Vancouver. Black's now offer pick-up only at a limited number of Telus stores. I suppose you have to mail exposed films in to an on-line address???

I guess Black's as I remember it must have left BC years ago, maybe even before Telus bought them out. We used to buy films and photo albums there, but never had the films developed.

We use a local, well-known photography store when we need personal photos

I'm not surprised to see those prices .............

I don't know about the first 2, but Sears Photo Studios are not a Sears operation. The store rents the space to an independent photographer, who can charge what he / she wants.

I got caught about 12 years ago by one who had opened at the Sears in downtown Vancouver . I didn't realise, but he didn't know what he was doing re passport photos ....... he did tell me that he had previously run his own studio in Burnaby and that he had not previously taken passport photos. However, I assumed that he would have read the instructions etc

OH was out of town, I was on my last trip downtown before the buses went on strike, so had him take the photos, for a rather exorbitant amount.

Unfortunately, I found out he had made them the wrong size for a Canadian passport when I started to fill out the form. By that time, the transit strike was on, and I had no means of getting back to him.

I went to a little photo developing place that was then in my little part of Vancouver ....... and had 2 b/w passport photos taken

It was a pity ....... because the passport photos taken by the guy downtown were about the best I've ever had done

Wal-Mart's photo center is generally Wal-Mart, but if the store as a portrait studio its generally outsourced, but there seems to be less and less portrait studios in Wally Marts these days.

We use Wal-Mart if we need prints of a photo, the are fastest and most cost effective in this area, you can submit online and have them in an hour (for non-speciality prints.) or take your media card in and print them instantly yourself.

Looks like the Blacks I went to just a few years ago closed prior to this announcement, it's not even listed on their website as a pick up only location.

I haven't used film since the late 90's early 2000's, and I've noticed its difficult to find in stores these days as well, I am sure there must still be some small amount of folks using film still.

both the Walmart and the Superstore at Trafalgar & Dundas have photo print labs. We've used the Superstore one a few times, for printing photos to send to my mum (who doesn't "do" social media), to do a photo-book thing after a family gathering, and for assorted UK and Canadian passport photos. Never had a problem with quality or service.

London Drugs (if you're in the west) is another option if you need photos printed. Have always had good experiences.
