Hi,

Can anyone tell me about the new regulations i.e. 2 out of 5 years requirement to maintain PR status? When is it going to be implemented? Do we still need an RRP? Does it mean that I can make my first landing and go out after staying for a month to continue my job and return every year for a short provided I meet the 2 out of the 5 years residence in Canada? Will the rule make it easier or stiffer for people who want to continue working with the previous empoloyment before they finally find a 'suitable' job in Canada and plan to actually settle in Canada. Thanks

The final version is not done yet, but it seems to imply just that you = are required
to be in Canada 2 of 5 years. =20

Interestingly, it may work out that upon every five years you may be = examined to
determine whether you meet that requirement. For example, = if they implement the PR
card, they could make it so that it is only = valid for five years, prompting you to
contact them again.

We will have to see.

Sidhu & Volpentesta, thanks for the insight. Any idea when it is going to be implemmented?

If you follow the Senate hearings you will get a bunch of different = estimates. The
Minister is keen on quick implementation some time in = Spring 2002 whereas some in
her department are more cautious. Spring = 2002 started sometime between first of
March and ended up at July.

This is a huge undertaking. A complete revision of an Act that was = twenty five
years old. It will take quite some time. Last time the = implementation took about
eighteen months.
