Bigger house - more land: The Reality Checck
A lot of people seem to come here for "bigger homes" and/or "more space"... so let's see how people already here made out. Also, inspired by a conversation on another thread, just for interest, when was it built?
I'll start: Single detached ~2100 square feet: big yard, 70x450 ft (3/4 acres), built in 1954.

In the near 'burbs, detached former "cottage", the lot's 23' wide so I suppose the house is just under 20' wide. Three small bedrooms, finished basement. Construction probably started in the early twenties and went in fits and starts until the present. Smaller and in worse repair than the John Laing bow fronted semi in which I grew up. Very drafty but, unusually for the area, not prone to flooding.

But this doesn't mean much, does it, without knowing what houses people lived in in the UK, and whether they did get the space and land they were looking for?
Anyway.
In London (UK), a 16ft wide terraced house with three bedrooms, about 1200sq ft, built in 1895, 16 x 30ft garden.
In Oakville, On., a 36ft wide detatched house, four bedrooms, around 3000sq ft, built in the 1980s, 30x40ft garden at the back, and about the same at the front..
But it's swings and roundabouts, isn't it? My house in London was 20 minutes from Tate Modern. Here, I'm 20 minutes from Canadian Tire. The kind of house you have is only one factor in your whole experience of moving. It's nice to get here and find that we can have a big house, but it wasn't our reason for coming.

England: 14ft wide, terraced House.3 beds, 2 reception rooms, 1 bathroom. Built 1902. 65ft x 14ft yard. Nice view of the River Blackwater in Maldon.
Canada: 2200sq ft (800 x 2 main & upper, 600 fully finished basement). 3 Beds, 4 bathrooms, 2 reception rooms, 1 basement rec room with bar, utlility room, machinery room & attached 1 car garage. Second 30x24ft detached garage with own heating and urinal. 1 acre lot. Glimpse of the ocean above the trees. Built 2000. Smallest house on our street!
The house in England was walking distance to numerous pubs. On balance however I prefer the Canadian one.

Still renting...
England: 900 sq ft, 2 bd flat with garden, 1+ hr commute on the trains / tube to work.
Canada: 750 sq ft, 1 bd apartment, no yard, but right next to stanley park & seawall, plus I can walk to work
Looking to buy something once we've sorted out the damn visas!

Canada: Four bed detached on 2.2 acres, built 2002. Nearly 4,000 sq ft. Main floor - large living room, huge kitchen, utility room, hallway, three large bedrooms, two bathrooms. Downstairs - (currently being renovated), large family room 23 x 26 ft (almost our old house's footprint), office, bedroom, library, sun room and two other rooms. Double garage. Our house overlooks woodland. We bought it for the eequivalent of £112,000 UK pounds.
I will leave you to decide if we got a bargain or not!

England: 680 sqft semi-detached two bedroom, had to build an office in the (small, terraced) garden to house our home business.
Here: Rent a live/work loft in downtown Toronto (god, I'm so hip!) haven't measured it, but at least 1100+ sqft. Plenty of space for the business.
Looking to buy a house near Halifax within the next year, so far have looked at nothing under 1500 sqft, with at least 1 acre land, often near the coast/lake (and for less than we sold our UK house for!) We nearly bought a 6-bedroom house with two offices, two living rooms and 1.5 acres for $228,000!

South East UK : 1300 ft2 detached two storey without a basement with single garage on a 30 ft by 90 ft plot with no view.
Calgary : 2500 ft detached two storey plus basement with tripple garage on a 127 ft by 225 ft lot with views of the Rocky Mountains and located beside two lakes.
Difficult to choose which is better

UK ; 3 bed semi, on a street, opposite a row of more 3 bed semi's, built in the 1960's, nice Cheshire town, squirrels in the back garden.
Sold it in 2004 for GBP 150k
Canada : 4 bed detached bi-level with oversized garage, 2300 sq ft. On a cul-de-sac, with a view of a park to the rear. Decent sized lot, not huge, but not a matchbox either.
Bought it in 2005 for $290k (so pretty much the equivalent of what we sold the UK one for.) That was last yr though. Worth a heck of a lot more now as the prices have soared here.

I left Mayland behind last year to come to Denmark, but hope to be in Nova Scotia in 2 years time.
