Re: Best Shipping company?
I gave about a month. I had 8 companies come in and do quotes and let them know that they were in competition.

Hi everybody.
This forum ROCKS !
I have had quotes from Robinsons,PSS,Abels and Pickfords.
Gut feeling is leaning towards Robinsons.
With the information picked up here, I intend to ask them about their insurance rates. They're quoting 3% on £1500 per cubic meter and a full 20ft container at 31 cu.mtrs. This worked out at about £1400
Lettonpercival have quoted 1.4% and a value figure of £25000 plus tax = £371.
I'll keep you informed re the outcome etc.

We have found PSS International Removals excellent in the past. We recommend our clients use them and always get good feedback.
Any one else used them?

Hi Miss Clinique,
Nothing other than recommending a trusted partner and trying to offer value to people who are migrating. We offer a consultative service to our clients and are happy to recommend companies that we have worked with for years in banking, health insurance, removals etc. Happy to confirm that we do not accept commissions or payments.
Thanks,
Fran

Also, I would not advise taking out insurance offered by the removal company, always go independent. Our insurance company were great in arranging compensation.

I just been quoted £2990 + 3% insurance by pickfords and 8-12 weeks delivery time, to Canada. (They will do the packing)
This is for 500 cubic feet.
I thought this is bit expensive? and 12 weeks for delivery?

We did, and had a bad experience. When we raised our issues with the PSS they were less than helpful. We treated the removal guys well, plying them with the usual refreshments and even a bonus at the end of packing. Little did we know what to expect later on once we'd arrived here.

Re: Best Shipping company?
We used GB Liners and everything was very well packed and landed in one piece with the exception of one broken plate so we were very happy. The downside was not everything fit into the 20ft container so GB Liners retained some of our goods until we paid an extra 400 pounds. We very displeased about this as we signed a contract and had already paid the original price quoted. We contacted BAR for their support and advice who were as much use as a chocolate fire guard which is why we ending up paying the 400 pounds to get our goods.
Also we lived in a 3 storey house and our large settees had to be removed through the first floor balcony doors as they wouldn't fit down the stairs. We pointed this out to GB Liners at the time of their assessment and GB Liners agreed to remove the settees out of the house through the first floor patio doors. On the day of the move GB Liners had made no provision for this, so my partner and I had to organise a fork lift truck to help get the settees out. We never even complained to GB Liners about this at the time so couldn't believe it when we were forced to pay the extra 400 pounds for our goods.
Would I recommend GB Liners to anyone else? No.

Re: Best Shipping company?
Hi,
That's interesting.
We have used Robinsons, and our container is at sea right now, so I can't comment on any breakages etc.
We were quoted for a 20 ft container at 1100 cu.ft.
When Robinsons came to load the container(after storage) they said that I had too much stuff and some would have to go groupage. The "extra" 40 cu.ft. was gonna cost some £700.
I queried this with them, especially as I had reduced the total goods by quite a bit. I gave them a list of stuff I didn't really need, like golf clubs, and said IF space is tight, don't pack these items.
I am guessing that the packers failed to amend the actual volume of my stuff, which was quoted at 1100 cu.ft. , but somehow the container had shrunk to 1050 cu.ft. Hence the overload of 40 cu.ft.
Anyway, I have received an e-mail from them saying that all items have been packed, so only time will tell.
I was advised by another shipping company to watch out for this type of "rip-off" because in their opinion, Robinsons could not ship my goods at the price quoted and still make a profit.
I have also been advised to watch out for a similar thing at the Canadian end, so I'll keep you posted.
