Re: Best Shipping company?
With that little stuff, seriously consider get rid of everything except the boxes and use air freight for them. By the way, the TV will not work in Canada.
Elsewhere on the forum I read about someone who found that air freight was cheaper than part container, for just sending a few boxes of stuff so do get a price quote. As for furniture replacement, you can look at Canadian websites such as Ikea, and price it out. Make sure that you know how much furniture costs in Canada so that you can make a valid price comparison.

Wasn't sure about the TV I know the freeview function wont work but the TV might can you not just change the settings.

Re: Best Shipping company?
Most modern TV's WILL work in Canada as long as they take a 110-220v electrical feed and a multifeed signal (NTSC & PAL are the two main ones). I brough my 50" LG plasma with me and it works just fine. DVD players also need to be multi-voltage and if you want to play region encoded DVD's bought in Canada (some are region encoded and some are region free) then you need a region free player. Big-name players tend not to be region free but often have firmware updates or hacks that are easy to perform that are detailed on the internet. Google the name, model and "region free" for further info.
The temptation to only ship as little as you can get away with is false economy in most cases. We read the "ship as much as you can" threads and like idiots, ignored that advice and shipped as little as we could to save money. When we landed, we drained over $6000 in two weeks just replacing essentials. That made the shipping look dirt cheap in comparison and I could have shipped the whole house for that and still been better off by the shipping fees I paid.
Unless you have high-quality, high-volume goods, think twice about shipping high-volume stuff. Work out the volume of your 3-piece suite and look at how much it is to replace. Furniture and beds are HUGE money here but the real killers are things like towels, bedding etc. You will EASILY blow $500+ on a decent, middle-of-the-road set of towels for the house. Double that and then some for bedding. The whole concept of "George @ Asda" prices hasn't made it here yet - at least outside the major cities from what I can tell.

Re: Best Shipping company?
It is an excellent thread.
We are close to a quote.
Reading every single comment, here is what I conclude so far.
1. GB Liner seems the best, so it is highly possible to use it.
2. PSS, seems cheaper, but many bad experience, definitely avoid
3. EVL, competitive, but seems very poor customer service
4. Moving Partnership seems quite helpful.
20 container about £4000
We will get GB Liner, Robinsons International, Moving Partnership, Fox's International to quote.
Thank you

The Moving Partnership gave a quote for £3,327 based on what we told via email. No storage quote back.
Robinsons International couldn't get anybody to come over until the 5th May. So we may not use it.
Fox's International will come over next week.
I will update all.

We got a Quote from GB liner, it will be between £3000 - £4000, including packing. A guy came over to have a look and said it might not fill the whole 20' container. So it would be cheaper to share with others. Their storage charge is £180 per month including VAT. Is it expensive?

GB Liners would be my choice out of those you have mentioned.

They only provide one month for free. We are thinking to store stuff in the UK until the PR arrives in case our PR is not granted at the end.

Re: Best Shipping company?
The accurate quote from GB Liner is back. It seems quite expensive.
20' container:
£1,130 for the UK end including insurance.
£3,530 from London to Halifax, plus 3.5% insurance.
The storage is £57 per week.

GB Liner comes back a new quote. £3,660 in total for 20' container + £200 for van parking space.

Re: Best Shipping company?
Hi David,
I'm just waiting back for a 20' quote from GB - does that price include your insurance & VAT? Also how long did they quote your shipping time to be..?
Thanks!!!

A poster on the Middle East forum says that EVL have gone into administration, which explains why I didn't get the quote I asked them for a couple of weeks ago!
(if anyone hasn't said that on here anywhere already - I might have missed it - if they have, "Sorry!")
So, I think I will need most of a 20ft container and I have decided to ask for one as if I cannot bear to get rid of the things I decided to leave in a life-laundry moment, I might need a bit extra space! I need packing of big things (sofas, sideboard etc), but I am packing the boxes of personal stuff myself.
Midlands to Vancouver area.
So far, I have tried Movecorp - £4720
and am waiting on Crown and GB Liners.
As for storage, I am getting 8 weeks for £180 for an inside room which is a little under the capacity of a 20ft container from a self storage place in Derby, including insurance up to £4K. (At the moment, I haven't got any high value stuff in there, so it doesn't come above that.) There is an offer of first 8 weeks half price (I am hoping to be gone by then!) and then it rises to £30 a week, insurance extra. Some of the storage costs on here seem very steep to me by comparison. Shopping around seems essential!

Re: Best Shipping company?
sorry but it might sound like a stupid question but why do you have to pay £200 for parking ? What does this mean ? I havent had any quotes yet , not going until Nov so just about to start ringing around .

Re: Best Shipping company?
Anyway, the Movecorp quote says;
Excludes (If Applicable)
Delivery above 1st floor, unless otherwise stated
Heavy lift items - Supply of external lifts, hoists or specialist lifting equipment
Stair carry, long carry, elevator fees and poor access/shuttle services
Flat pack assembly and tradesman services
Charges for examination/inspection, x-ray, hold, demurrage and fumigation
Government Taxes and Duties, Cargo dues (South africa only)
Quarantine/Agricultural Charges
Unpacking on baggage consignments
Formal Customs Entry if applicable
Storage in the UK or at destination
It doesn't mention VAT and so I would assume it includes it, as it is mandatory and they should say next to the quote if it needs to be added on.
I'm not sure what you mean by "parking" - please explain!
Insurance is not included but is mentioned lower down in the quote without a value, presumably because they will have to know the value of my goods in order to quote for that.

Re: Best Shipping company?
Ah - thanks for that! The "parking" charge is when they need to suspend a parking bay with the local council or get a permit etc - usually happens if you live near main road / city centre etc...
Well, I just came across that info by accident, searching for the EVL website that I managed to fail to save to my favourites. Googling EVL returned a link to the Middle East section of BE and there it was!
