Bereavement Flight Services
 

In the good old days, airlines would be favourable with pricing if you made a trip due to a bereavement involving an immediate family member, and could supply evidence.

I have contacted British Airways, KLM and Air Transat to no avail.

Is the Bereavement Service simply a thing of days gone by?

Has anyone used the service in recent times?

I've claimed for it with Westjet and Air Canada and received discounts or partial refunds, but don't know about the airlines you've asked.

Most scheduled carriers in NA offer a breavement. You pay the full class fare (not discounted) at time of booking, send in copy of death cert (for immediate family loss only) and in most cases get a parial refund.

Often though, dicounted fares are cheaper if you can find one to suit your itinerary.

I bought a one way from Air Transat, as I was hoping my father would have a good 6 months at least, as opposed to the weeks it turned out to be.

Air Transat told me categorically, as did Lufthansa that the service is not offered.

I also heard that some offer the service on flights originating in Canada or USA.

I want a one way from Blighty to Vancouver.

Air Canada will do it, however Air Transat are likely cheaper, but as a charter don't offer bereavement.

I looked into this 3 years ago and Air Canada did provide this service. It was more expensive than the basic fare but you could change your return flight date without charge. It could help if funeral arrangements have not been finalized when you book.

For the three times we have needed it so far it has been cheaper to pay for normal last minute flights.

This. BA & KLM no longer offer the service.

And this. A last minute fare with KLM (12 hours) last year, was over 1000 $ cheaper than the AC bereavement fare.

Last year and in 2010 it was difficult to get any bereavement flights. It was also less trouble to book a last minute flight.

I contacted BA and Air Canada as my uncle has passed away a few months back. It worked out lightly cheaper to book the flight through a normal booking.
