Belleville ON or London ON?

Re: Belleville ON or London ON?
Belleville itself is pretty blue collar. I've dropped by Cobourg (on the way back from work in Belleville) and found it really picturesque.

[Have you looked into the little oasis of Cobourg - 40 minutes by train to Toronto and an amazing beach, countryside and very child friendly. W e moved here 8 months ago ( originally Uk) and love it here.

Re: Belleville ON or London ON?
We Live in Fergus, Ontario. Moved here from Nova scotia a year ago and just love it. Great community with loads of amenities, surrounded by beautiful farm land and hobby farms aplenty, As DBD stated, lots of mennonites but I find them quite interesting really.
I work in the emergency Department and they are a very stoical bunch, often driving miles in their buggies with limbs hanging off to get to the hospital. They are great patients and never complain. They keep us in good business in the height of bean picking season as they frequently collapse due to picking for hours in their full mennonite garb They do gift us loads of pies too, which has to be a good thing! As long as you aren't in a hurry it is a visual feast seeing the horses and buggies on the road. (just don't try to leave St Jacobs at rush hour...!)
Anyway, back to the practicalities. We have Kitchener and Waterloo about half an hour away and Toronto maybe an hour and a half? depending on traffic. I truly think I have the best of all worlds living here. Worth a wee look anyway.

Re: Belleville ON or London ON?
Hmm..where to start. I should say before I begin and all the NS lovers shoot me down in flames, that this was just our experience. I understand it will vary hugely from others.
Well, we were happy in NS for a few years (well I think we tried to tell ourselves were happy) but to be honest we were just so poor there it was pretty miserable. The wages for both our jobs were crap and believe it or not got worse as the years went on (cut backs) The taxes were higher than here and no matter how hard we tried, we just couldn't quite get on top of it. My OH and I both work in registered professions and the money they charged every year just for registering was just crazy. We weren't earning enough to justify paying it. I think we began to get quite bored in the end. We had no money to travel (prices out of Halifax are just awful) and we had explored the surrounding areas to death. Beautiful place, but we began to feel quite trapped.
I think we saw quite an economic decline just in the 5 years we lived there. Businesses were shutting down, unemployment was high and many people were having to go' up north' or 'out west' to make ends meet.
The level of drug abuse was very high as there was so much boredom, poverty and unemployment. And honestly I don't think in all my years as an Emerg nurse I have witnessed so many shootings, stabbings and violent crime. It was becoming insane. So common, it often didn't even make the papers.
Anyhoo...We could not see a great future for us or our kids there. The company my OH worked for was quickly shrinking with redundancies and we decided to jump before we were pushed.
In Fergus, although our house cost a bit more, we have great wages and a much better quality of life. Life is easier again and I no longer have to faint at the price of milk etc. We have actual choices. The kids are happy and actually doing lots of 'stuff.' We can travel again. My only regret is that we did not move here sooner. I read a news article recently that suggested Nova Scotia was becoming the new Detroit. Sums it up really.
