You will be able to change the car part of your license by just swapping it but not the commercial part. You will need to take the theory, air brake and practical test.
Theory will take a couple of days to study as will air brake. You can take them at most service NS places. Here in NB you can walk in but an appointment can be made in advance. Practical tests can be a week or two wait depending on location but you might as well book it and get the theory done in the meantime.
Costs will depend on whether you have an employer that will let you have use of a vehicle or not. Look at Service NS website for test costs.

You might want to check if you HAVE to surrender you UK license immediately, In Manitoba you don't, you can get your theory and air and take the practical while still having your UK license. The reason being IF you fail your practical Class 1 in MB you have to wait 14 days if your on a canadian car license but if you have hung on to your UK one you can retake the class 1 practical the next day as the waiting rule doesnt apply (or didn't when i took mine) ! No one wants to be sat on their ass for two weeks waiting ? Well worth checking if it's the same out west as MB and if so hang on to your UK license till you have passed your Class 1. That UK license is good for 90 days.
