At least they don't have a lovely selection of poisonous snakes like Australia. Now that would be scary! :scared: :scared: :scared:

I knew some folks who lived a hours drive outside Victoria in a rented house. I noticed the chimney stack was badly cracked all the way up. A quake caused it i was told. Land slips are a problem too. I think insurance is the way to go.

On my first day of work here in Victoria I was given my 'earthquake survival pack' (not sure how a pair of gloves, a bandage and a torch will help, but there we go!), and some earthquake instructions. Bit of a surprise! Then a couple of weeks ago we had a minor quake which was big enough to feel. Mind you, I was in Brussels once when they had a bigger quake!

Bought our first house here yesterday (well, the conditions have been removed), so we're looking into insurance, and find that earthquake insurance is seperate and costs nearly as much again as the standard house insurance! So, if we don't take it out, I think that that Victoria will probably be hit by 'the big one' in the next year ;)

I just remembered, that there was an earthquake under Walsal a few years ago, I think is was a 3.??. I remember it waking me up, and thinking that there was a few of large trucks on my front lawn trying to rip the front of the house off!!! :scared: Once the noise died down I rolled over and went back to sleep. :D

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies, quakes was something that was not common in the UK so we never thought about it until after we landed, but a small price to pay to be living in beautiful B C as they say. :)
cheers

Exactly jerry, part of the price for living in paradise. Although we are prepared in case of an emergency, they do not affect our lives in any way.

Until I stayed in a hotel just outside Vancouver I had no idea it had earthquakes...but then again there are not that many places where you don't have to worry about something....I live 20/30 miles out to sea on a sand bank on the US East coast....I have one eye on the weather all storm season..... :D :D

Yes it is worth it. I've been here 32 years, and experienced 3 quakes in that time that bothered me but we have ongoing little tremors, I understand. My only concern lies in the fact that I work in a high-rise in downtown Vancouver, but the last one made my office building sway like crazy, and looking out the window every building seemed to be swaying, but evidently they are built to withstand quakes up to about 7.5. But "the big one" is supposed to come sometime in the next 200 years. I just don't want to be at work when it happens! But honestly, you can't safeguard against everything. It reminds me of the BC family that researched the safest place in the world to live, because they were afraid of earthquakes and tsunamis, and moved to the Falkland Islands, shortly before war broke out between Britain and Argentina, LOL!!

It might be worth investigating going on one of these courses ...

http://www.pep.bc.ca/hazard_prepared...w/prepare.html

Also, keep plenty of water in the house in various locations (and also in the shed if you have one)

I know people that go the whole hog on this (have an earthquake pack in the car and plenty of cash (in case they have to bribe a boat owner to take them back to the North shore!) and a roll of quarters (for phone calls).

And earthquake insurance, don't be suprised if you have to pay the first $10k. I still think it is worth it!
