On my first day of work here in Victoria I was given my 'earthquake survival pack' (not sure how a pair of gloves, a bandage and a torch will help, but there we go!), and some earthquake instructions. Bit of a surprise! Then a couple of weeks ago we had a minor quake which was big enough to feel. Mind you, I was in Brussels once when they had a bigger quake!
Bought our first house here yesterday (well, the conditions have been removed), so we're looking into insurance, and find that earthquake insurance is seperate and costs nearly as much again as the standard house insurance! So, if we don't take it out, I think that that Victoria will probably be hit by 'the big one' in the next year ;) |

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies, quakes was something that was not common in the UK so we never thought about it until after we landed, but a small price to pay to be living in beautiful B C as they say. :) cheers Jerry |

Although we are prepared in case of an emergency, they do not affect our lives in any way. |

Anyone any comments, or is it just hype ? cheers Jerry Until I stayed in a hotel just outside Vancouver I had no idea it had earthquakes...but then again there are not that many places where you don't have to worry about something....I live 20/30 miles out to sea on a sand bank on the US East coast....I have one eye on the weather all storm season..... :D :D |

Re: BC and earthquakes
It might be worth investigating going on one of these courses ...
http://www.pep.bc.ca/hazard_prepared...w/prepare.html Also, keep plenty of water in the house in various locations (and also in the shed if you have one) I know people that go the whole hog on this (have an earthquake pack in the car and plenty of cash (in case they have to bribe a boat owner to take them back to the North shore!) and a roll of quarters (for phone calls). And earthquake insurance, don't be suprised if you have to pay the first $10k. I still think it is worth it! TTFN Clare |
