BC Earthquake

Apparently the article below appeared in The Victoria Times on Saturday 3rd February. I have no idea what sort of publication this is, but it does sound a bit worrying.

B.C. braces for possible earthquake Judith Lavoie, CanWest News
Service; Victoria Times Colonist
Published: Saturday, February 03, 2007

Check the emergency supplies, first aid kits and flashlights, there is
an increased probability of a major earthquake hitting B.C.'s south
coast during the next week.

Seismologists at the Geological Survey of Canada, based at the Pacific
Geoscience Centre in Sidney, B.C., are tracking a series of tremors
that started in Puget Sound along the U.S. West Coast three days ago
and are working their way up Vancouver Island.

The next window of high earthquake risk will be about April 2008.

The Victoria Times Colonist is a quite respectable local daily.

Much ado about nothing this time apparently. ;)

Although it is going to happen at some point.

I read that in the Saturday edition of the Globe & Mail as well. Mostly it's centered around the southern part of Vancouver Island.

It is all hysteria and the media at work.

Every time I have been to the west coast the locals spoke of The Big One. It will happen one day. Maybe today, maybe in 2107 or 2207, who knows? If one is a resident then what is one supposed to do.

Montreal is on an earthquake zone. Some three miles from my place is Mount Royal in the centre of the city which they tell me is an extinct volcano. Now will it erupt again with massive loss of life? If it ever happens then I will not be around to worry about it!

What I worry about is what is very likely to happen, not what might perhaps someday may occur.

Things are getting better already.

Residents of southern British Columbia can breathe easier now that the window of increased probability in which a major earthquake could strike the region closed sooner than expected.

It was just on the news. The seismologists have cancelled the warning....."for now"!
