I am coming to Vancouver in a few weeks time on a BUNAC visa and I'm planning on staying there for a year.

Can I use an International Driving Licence from the UK to drive in Canada for that first year? I have used that successfully abroad before for long periods of time but I'm confused as to whether I can do that in BC before having to get a Canadian licence.

Thanks!
As a visitor, 6 months is the maximum you can use your drivers license. An international license counts for nothing, bring your UK license. As a resident it is 90 days. No good pleading ignorance if you go over, you risk a ticket and possibly your insurance being void and consequently on the hook for any claims.

Thank you for your reply. Looks like I'll be studying for a test then.

Would I be able to get insurance for driving for the 90 days easily? I wouldn't be renting a car but driving my boyfriends. What have other people done about that? Any recommended insurance agencies?

You would likely be able to be covered under another drivers insurance. The cost and any conditions would depend on your age and experience as a driver (how long you have had a license and possibly any claims).
