So I'm moving over to Canada in January from Oxford and would like to sort out a bank account; has anyone managed to set one up before moving over? If so how did you do it?

There is a link that allows you to apply for an account before you arrive.

I went on holiday to NS and walked in the door and got a bank account with HSBC, then walked out. Some pieces of I.D. were required but that's all.

I would suggest that you look into which banks are available in the area you wish to live. For example, there are not many HSBC branches in Calgary but then, there are no physical branches of President's Choice anywhere in Canada and people get along with them just fine.

First bank account I opened I got one of those piggy banks from Natwest. If you saved up they gave you different ones, I only got the stupid baby one as I always spent my pocket money on football cards and Corona pop. I think my mum was really disappointed I never got the other pigs.
