By the time all this has been debated, the poor animal could bleed to death!

Money and availability. The injury isn't life threatening so it's a good chance for us to practise so as to be ready for any really serious one - even assuming unlimited funding we wouldn't be able to get a vet out for any such case in a timely fashion. The cut seems to be doing ok but it's rather weird to see a horse with steam rising from a hole in its side.

Are you stitching that wound?

I did something similar to my mother's dog last year and the vets said if it left more than 24 hours, you have to cut more out,as the edges won't knit and then get it stitched....

We're not planning to stitch it, no.

We do have some experience with the business of cutting more out. On horses, perhaps also on dogs, the excessive tissue is called proud flesh, you have to dig it down to keep the growing flesh at a level where the skin can grow over the hole. There's also something called Wonder Dust which is a corrosive powder that can be applied to the wound, it "eats" the proud flesh.

We used to look after a wild beast that had a hind leg injury resulting in rampant proud flesh, it needed hacking every other day and hosing twice a day. We'd twitch the horse and move quickly because, when the twitch wore off he'd cattle kick the wall. Fortunately this one's calmer.

I use this site for all sorts of conversions:
http://www.worldwidemetric.com/metcal.htm

It's really useful - just put in one amount, press calculate, and it gives you the equivalent in other measures.

I believe that cc's and ml's are equivalent.

21000 of body weight intramuscularly twice daily, it says. Based on this thread I'm going to go with 30ccs twice tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for that. We got the drugs in to her in the end but it's hard to push the plunger on a syringe of such thick stuff.
