Bad things happen in small towns
Not very often, but when they do it's very unpleasant:

Re: Bad things happen in small towns
I was sat with Sgt Doberstein from the Alberta Family/domestic violence unit earlier this spring and the stats he showed and gave us were horrendous!!!!!! Alberta is the worst province in the country by far.
Also, Harbour House here in Lethbeidge turn AWAY women on a regular basis from the women's refuge. Sgt Doberstein actually said that there are what he calls "murder - suicides" happening so reguarly in Canada that they rarely make much more than the local news......scary. The policeman is actually part of a special task force that has been commisioned to deal with violence against women and children, and to hear him talk of these acts and the graphic images that he showed us were horrendous. Well done for posting this though........definitely a sobering story. Mrs M x |

Sad story. |
Re: Bad things happen in small towns
On the topic of crime - Canada is unfortunately the rape capital of the western world.

Wow- meth head. Scary!!
I could never bring my children up in a smaller community. The drug problems coupled with the violence- awful, just awful. |

http://www.wavaw.ca/informed_stats.php Maybe more people trust the cops to do something in canada, so reported rates are higher, who knows? |

Rape statistics are notouriously difficult to compare. I seriously doubt canada is any worse than any other equivalent country.
The attitude of a lot men towards women here a lot based on those traditional values that so many desire, the little women in the house, and men doing 'manly' things it doesn't surprise me at all..... This country is behind the times in a lot of things and a lot of that rape is domestic violence |

With large dogs. And power tools. ;) But deep inside, very insecure, lacking confidence and without a deeper meaningful rounded personality. Vaucous, dull, tiresome, belligerent, self centred, and very irritating. The very symptom of North American culture. R. |

http://www.wavaw.ca/informed_stats.php What scares me about this report is the second one....that "60% of college-aged males would commit sexual assault" if the thought they'd get away with it! What sort of society is this....by that, I mean Society in general, not this country in particular. |

Its no more likely to happen in the boonies than anywhere else. Why would you expect otherwise, arseholes are a universal feature, no one country or region has the market cornered. |

It made me grateful to have survived college without getting into more trouble than I did! |

And that some of the more backward areas in Canada of which there are a lot, see domestic violence as something that is part of the order of things and in the more backwards or whacked out communities not just something that should remain behind closed doors but a mans right!! The isolation that can be found in Canada may appear to idyllic to many that have grown up on a crowed island, but is also means that its easy to stay stuck in an old fashioned world with old fashioned values, many of which are no longer acceptable to the modern world And to add the ‘Jock’ mentality that is fostered in young men as an acceptable role model within sports has its dark side too when it reaches over to the mixed social environment |
Re: Bad things happen in small towns
Of course you could also argue that there are also large enclaves of immigrant communities from less enlightened counties in the large cities where abuse of women is part of the fabric of life.... Im sorry, this generalisation just doesnt fit, it never has and it never will. I didnt realise that the jock thing was so exclusively "small town". If anything you can argue that a small town or community where everyone knows everyone else is more likely to result in young men identifying young women in the community as individuals that they know rather than some faceless sex object to be "had", but thats perhaps a stretch. The media assualt on our youth is a universal thing, living in a city or in the country doesnt make any difference.
My wife lived briefly in a building in missisagua that was largely taken over by Somali refugees and their extended families, and the stuff she could tell you would make your eyes water. Dont give me this crap about backwards rural communities. |

What a load of Bull. You think its any different to the US for example? If you want to throw stereotypes around lets all kick the rednecks and hispanics around for the "little woman" thing first.

There's lots of hell in white-collar-suburban-wastelands... but with shiny, new cars. |
