In and around Toronto

I am planning a trip out to Toronto area in August with the family. We aim to settle in or around the Toronto area in July 2010. Like most people I'm interested in areas which are in a commutable distance to the centre of Toronto (say approx 1 hours depending on traffic). Does anyone have advice of the best areas to look at? Thanks in advance.

Not enough information. Do you need easy access to strip joints, pool halls, horse racing tracks, maple syrup shacks? Do you want to live in an apartment, a townhouse, a mansion with pool and tennis courts, a farm? If you don't define your desires more clearly you'll wind up in Oakville.

Despite what the comment suggests, IMO that would not necessarily be a bad thing.

The merits and failings of Oakville have been beaten to death on other threads, in short, either very nice but expensive (South of QEW) or cheap but cookie cutter housing project (North of QEW). However, the poke was at the routineness of the suggestion of Oakville, like telling everyone who's going to work in London to move to Guildford.

Wish it was my vessel, unfortunately just one we hired to sail around the greek islands. Nice boat though 36ft bene. Will have to check out the Oakville Yacht Squadron when we get over there. I expect they are a bit more fussey as to who they hire their yatchs to than the people we use in greece.

Let me start the question again as I do appreciate it was somewhat open ended and I certainly didn't mean to spark a debate on the merits or otherwise of Oakville. I'm looking for information on the web about the Toronto and surrounding areas - the best source I've found so far is www.settlement.org which has detailed suburb maps but the sites which represent each suburb are more aimed at attracting new business. What I'm looking for is information relevant to moving the family there so schools, health care, local attractions, transport links, employers etc.

I realise that I'm not going to find this in a single site but if you have any alternatives to the above site I'd be interested. Thanks again.

Let me qualify my original question as it was rather open ended and I didn't really intend to spark a debate about the merits of Oakville :huh:. I'm looking for information sources on Toronto and surrounding areas (within approx 1 hour commute). The best source I have found is www.settlement.org which gives quite good community maps however the web sites it links to for each area are geared to attracting new businesses and not really to informing on the factors important to a family relocating to Canada from the UK.

Are there any good sources of information on the web which provide more detail relevant to family life such as schools, transport links, medical care, shopping, places of attraction, sports etc? Thanks

There is gobsmackingly informative detail about Toronto itself available here: http://www.toronto.ca/demographics/neighbourhoods.htm The GTA, once outside Toronto proper, is much of a muchness, Woodbridge is Italian, Markham Chinese, Oakville English but it all looks the same and offers much the same lack of amenities.
