Probably because in Canadian terms its is unusual to have two large cities so close to each other (in relative terms) and much like the UK there is an historic rivalry between the two that is carried over onto the sports field..so there is a big sporting rivalry esp in Hockey..with the Oilers historically being far more successful in the NHL than the Flames.
