areas to avoid in Winnipeg central area
 

hi am looking at moving to Winnipeg not too sure where yet thought of central area can anyone recommend any good areas anywhere in
Winnipeg so i can check out the property on mls needs to be good for family's work etc i am a car mechanic :D

I live in Fort Richmond, Lovely quiet area, not too pricey compared to some areas of winnipeg. Close to Pembina Hwy ... and from what I know of, the crime rate is low.

why Central?
Centre of town is 20-30 minutes drive from the outskirts.
Crossing town is 30-40 (coz you avoid the centre)
The big Malls are not in the centre - Ballet, theater, baseball, hockey and office workers are in the centre of Winnipeg
But having said that
Riverview, Crescentwood, Fort Rouge Wolseley, St Boniface, (Norberry, Winakawa), River Heights are all very nice areas that are hidden about a block off major thru roads that are within 10-15 minutes walking of the downtown offices. ( only 1 car mechanic type garage in the centre of Winnipeg that I can think off)
Looking at the MLS.ca Winnipeg Map basically if not into Condo life style avoid the area called central. Then as you move out you get bigger pockets of nicer homes.

But as you'll find out Winnipeg has very few "ooh not there" areas it might be 80 duff households amongst 750. So if your happier in a working class area Tuxedo wouldn't be the place for you. Search the Mls for house size and style then use google maps to zoom in with the satellite imagery. ( bigger the garden older the area, few trees with lots of houses - newer area mostly privately owned with youngish families) then ask on here about that road or area. I think between us we have South ( East and West ). West and North West covered with people actually living in those areas. My best friends at work are both from the North East so I can ask them. There is also a couple of out of towner's with. so pretty much local knowledge.

But You need to give details of what you like. snotty, beatnik, working upper middle how ever you'd like to describe it Winnipeg has it all.

Side thoughts ---

The school rate in the Top Ten of Canada is in a duff neighbourhood and is full of local kids. the most expensive private girls school is in a very small pocket of good houses. surrounded by a working class area, office block and a river.

Finally being a car mechanic you have a trade that may be better than most, as virtually every small town, village and rural community needs 1. so also look at places like Brandon, Steinbach, Morden & Winkler, Swan River even Thompson and Flin Flon (don't know anything about the last 2 places).

You could be giving yourself a whole new adventure, unless of course your life choices need a large city infrastructure.

hi thanks for that Grah i just picked central because thought that would be where the work was. i would rather live out a bit as i do here in the UK i am 30 miles from London where i am at the moment nice thats how i like it middle class area would be looking for the same really just a nice area to raise a family :D thanks alot for your help cheers :beer:

I suggest you hook up with a Winnipeg realtor, get there advice based on your goals and get on there mailing lists- they will bombard you with tempting houses within your preferences, I used Patrick Realty in St James and they were forwarding me details, 6 months before we landed!
Have you considered an out of town acreage? A real life change but a fantastic upbringing for kids- we have no regrets!
