area change or not?
hi
I would really appreciate some advice from those going through the process of immigrating to Canada. We initially had researched Nova Scotia and thought that this is were we would want to go and set up our new life with our kids. I had contacted hospitals (i 'm a nurse) and looked into registration. When we spoke to an immigration advisor however, he wasnt totally convinced we had enough points for federal skilled as i had only worked part time as nurse for the last 3 years and it would be "tight" to prove the required points for this program. he advised us therefore to look at the community identified stream or the provincial skilled with a job offer. however it appears there is no shortage of nurses in nova scotia and getting a job offer never mind an lmo seems to be difficult. As for the CIS our concern is that we are arriving in a new country, without jobs and have ayoung family. so to make a long story simplier, we went to the workign abroad expo in dublin and spoke to some lovely people in saskatchewan who are actively recruiting nurses and have sent my resume to them and they have said they would be interested in employing me and would be happy to arrange a work permit for us to move as a family. however we had never even considered this province never mind really know if its for us. my question therefore as should we take this chance with a job offer or go were we originally planned with our contacts that we have made and researched? thanks |
Re: area change or not?
You could use this as a stepping stone, whilst researching this province also look at duration for PR once you are in-country.....I realise moving your family again is probably not something you want to do but it is an option.
As I am told here when I am looking for work, "dont leave any door closed" |
Re: area change or not?
I wouldn't move without having work. I'd want to go and look at Saskatchewan though, there will be moments when you're not at work and it might be that "flat and cold" doesn't do it for you.

In this economy I would give it serious consideration. Lots of people... Ok, some people, rather like SK, but as dbd says, try and check it out before leaping at it. Ive always said the key to a sucessful go at emigrating is the job.

see thats what my heart is saying a job offer will help settlign and financially from the very start. with the likelihood of having a lot less equity from the sale of our house, the sooner we have jobs the better but its just not somewhere we originally planned
I suppose whether its worth it rather depends on what you have now and stand to lose... |

I'd go for it.

Re: area change or not?
In my view, there is nothing wrong with an area change.
As you say, there are some lovely people in saskatchewan and you may love it there. I am living in Quebec. It was not even on the list of places where I wanted to live. In the end I just used it as a quick way into Canada with a plan to move on as soon as possible, but now, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. In north america it is not uncommon for people to move thousands of kilometres for work. I have one friend who has not stayed in the same continent for more than two years (currently working in the UK after 2 years in Montreal). Once you have made the big move to Canada, it is not hard to go elsewhere. Thousands of people do it every year. If Plan A does not look like it can work, then maybe it is time to look at Plan B. But before making any decision I would pay a visit to saskatchewan and possibly look at other provinces who need nurses which may be a better match. |
