Applying for a SIN card

Hi all,

I recently received my PR and was wondering what the best way to get my Social Insurance is?

I'll be in the UK for a few more months, is it possible to do this online/via mail or do I need to be in Canada?

Also, has anyone applied for jobs before moving without first having their SIN?

Many thanks

Jamie

I think you need to be there. We got ours during a research trip. It was really quick - about 10 mins. She gave us our SIN numbers while we were there so I would imagine you could start work straight away. The SIN cards arrived at a friends Canadian address a few weeks later.

yes, that's right. It's a face-to-face thing. You have to go to the office that deals with SINs in your area and show certain documents (your landing papers etc). Call before you go to make sure you take the right documents. You can't do it online or over the phone.

Go to your local Govt office, google or yell.com ( Service Nova Scotia )

Yeah, I just did it: took about 20 minutes in the government office down-town, they checked the visa with a magnifying glass to ensure it was real, checked the COPR copy and asked a few questions... that was it. All I needed was the passport and COPR.
