Hmmm, now that I never knew. However, I've been in Canada for just over 16 years now and was a computer contractor for 15 years prior to that. Actually I kept a lot but finally got rid of everything when I downsized 18 months ago!

Re: Applying for British State Pension Questions
From an earlier reply - But imagine someone applying for the pension, in full knowledge that they always worked and their pay slips back then always showed a deduction for NI, so they think everything is okay, and then they're one of those unfortunate people who worked for a dodgy employer who either pocketed the contributions or was just such a bad record keeper that the contributions were passed on but without the necessary identifying details so they were never credited to their account.
Simple example - the employer deducts £xxx worth of NI conts from the wages of 10 employees. When they pass this on instead of 10 names and the corresponding 10 NINOs, somehow there are only 9 names and numbers. Or someone's name and NINO shows up twice. One of the nine has had the money deducted but not credited.
Since then, the company may have gone out of business, records lost/destroyed,etc but old Inland Revenue/HMRC records show 10 lots of NI conts from that employer but only 9 recipients. Or maybe the shady owner retired to Brazil (or faked going overboard on his ship ) and pocketed the contributions from one or even all ten.
If you are 'the one' then maybe you can tell them who you worked for, where it was and when and maybe they are able to tally it with the other nine.

Re: Applying for British State Pension Questions
Quick update on my claim -
As of last week I had still heard nothing, so I phoned the DWP. Eventually learned that my claim had been approved on 25th February (4 months after it was received) and a back payment made. A letter had been posted to me but I was told to expect a 28 day delay in receiving this, which is odd as the return of my supporting documents took less than 7 days. Check with World First - no payment. Eventually they found a payment had been made, missing my reference which I had specifically asked on my claim form be included. Not knowing who the payment was intended for WF sent the funds back to the DWP, on the same day.
Called the DWP again last Wednesday, no trace showing. During that conversation I also gave new bank details (as WF are ceasing private trading in April). WF then sent me a tracker showing that the Government's bank had received the payment late on February 26. Called DWP again today, advised them if the info I had received. They said that the "suspension" of payment would be lifted and, having repeated the new bank details, we agreed how this (& future) payments should be made.. I await the funds later this week...but not holding my breath.
ETA: Average call waiting time (after the recorded messages and twice repeated menu), 20 minutes - that's if you are lucky enough to get in the queue, and that's not guaranteed!
For balance - the 4 members of staff I spoke to we're all extremely helpful.
2nd edit: Emailed the DWP 10 days ago. Received an automated response "we normally reply within 10 working days" - so no response yet. 10 working days!

Re: Applying for British State Pension Questions
Sent my application registered mail yesterday. I had it ready 2 weeks ago. I triple-checked it yesterday morning before going to the post office to make sure I hadn't missed anything. But today I realized I didn't check if I had signed and dated it! I was going back and forth on that part. I was scared to send it any earlier than exactly 4 months prior to my birthdate in case they checked the postal date. Well, nothing I can do about it now.
