Anyone move from Alberta to Ontario or thinking of it?

Has anyone arrived in Alberta and then moved to Ontario at a later date, if so, just interested in what the outcome was...or is anyone thinking of doing the move? Let us know what your thoughts are etc...

This is our game plan within the next 5 years or so, nothing set in stone, we do know Alberta is not our forever home for lots of reasons though, ironically DD is wanting to move to the West Coast, so we have to sell Ontario to her, she has never been;) We are planning a recce next year and for subsequent years until we are ready to move, we have decided to make as much money here while the going is good ready to do something more fun when we are more set financially.

Thanks Piff Poff....we have been to Ontario a few times prior to moving (2008 and 2010) to Alberta. It was Ontario which started our adventure in wanting to move but had to take a job offer in Alberta for our PR. We have been in Alberta for just over 18 months and did a quick recce back to Ontario in August of this year. We wondered whether it would still hold the pull we had back when we first went (it did). We absolutely love the Kingston and 1000 Islands area and love the water that Ontario has to offer. This is definitely our goal...DD you would love Ontario ..It is good to hear other views even though we know this is our goal too

Lots of people I know want to do the opposite of you! The impression of Alberta right now is that it's the land of milk and honey, black gold etc..

I know, I have been here for 20 months....but I did not come for the money, it was a means to get PR....I do not want to buy into the cookie cutting housing with vinyl siding and with no privacy whatsoever...estate upon estate looking exactly the same being thrown up...As soon as we landed we knew we would not stay, but each to their own. I have spoken with a few Canadians that have come from other provinces, who have said they could not stay in Alberta, it is just a means to an end and as soon as they have made their money they are off.

Ontario is where our dream started too, on a 5 night honeymoon, Toronto/Niagara but a subsequent holiday had us searching Alberta and a job offer appeared, so here we are, we were thinking BC for a little while but a car buying trip a couple of years ago reignited the pull of Ontario, so we need to investigate far more and start narrowing down areas. The water is a big pull tor us as is the percieved (by us) easier access to the rest of the world.

You'll be wanting to avoid Mississauga and Barrie then.

Is the whole of Alberta one big subdivision then? Is the whole of Ontario "rural"? Do you believe it is not possible to live "rural" in Alberta?

Hi
We live within 30 mins from the centre of Calgary and none of the houses where we live have vinyl siding and they have privacy plus most have direct views of the Rockies. You can buy rural in Calgary but it comes at a high price, I do agreed most of the new housing in and around Calgary are the constructed side by side large vinyl covered style houses on small lots even the majority of the housing in the satellite towns outside Calgary are going this way. Before i arrived in Alberta I thought everyone lived on a ranch and was a cowboy sadly its not the case.

I lived in Ontario briefly before I moved to Alberta, the thing that got me about the GTA was the traffic which was appalling and also the taxes are way higher than in Alberta, e.g. income taxes, they also have HST now. And there always seemed to be someone on strike. Also Ontario is up to its eyeballs in debt.

I like visiting Ontario because it's got a bit more history and there are lots of things to see and do but it doesn't make sense to live there imv, if you're already settled in Alberta. The winters here may be a bit longer and colder but at least you don't have to shovel them as much.

I can't see what you gain by moving back east that makes it worth while, unless you've got family there or some outstanding job offer.

But it's just the same in Ontario, have a look around Aurora and Newmarket for example, or Mississauga. And you get to pay higher property taxes to boot.

But... but... the boat sales guy at Bass Pro Shops is always telling me about all the lakes in Alberta, surely he wasn't lying.

I like the St. Lawrence River too, but not enough to move there. Whatever floats your boat I guess. :p
