Anyone bought a MODULAR home? Why?
 

Just wondering. We will hopefully be on the move (again) soon. Now we're after an acreage but with land being so expensive around these parts, we were wondering what modular homes are like and whether they would be a better, cheaper, different (in a good way) alternative to a regular site-built home. If anyone has one, or lived in one, or knows someone with one, give us a shout. Also, wondering what they're like in terms of appreciation (or otherwise) - and, yes, I know this is in part determined by land values.

The thought of a new home built elsewhere and erected like an IKEA flat pack, sounds too good to be true. Is it, indeed?

I live in a pre-fab, a Viceroy cabin. It's different, yes.

Some say that module homes are better built than conventional homes, as they have to withstand the pressures of being moved.

The materials used are the same in both.

sorry i forget where i found it, but if you search generally on self built/cabin type homes you'll hopefully find a construction video i watched on line that showed two homes being constructed side by side, one prefab, the other from scratch. interesting and shows the advantages/disadvantages of both. have you looked at building from old shipping containers? seriously, if you have not heard about it, google it and have a look.

Thanks for the shipping container idea. I've seen this on those extreme homes programmes - I've just contacted someone in Victoria for more info. Watch this space .....

welcome. please post any info piccies, i'm curious about it, cost, warmth for over here. don't think i'd have the nadgers to actually build one though.

Having done some viewings of modulars with owners etc. they have shown us bills etc. Not expensive heat wise and property taxes are usually lower due to the land lot they are on.
