Get some of that welsh stuff you can get from sainburys - penderyn iirc - its actually very nice - quite light and easygoing

Your canadian pal will be grateful for any malt as it's generally horribly over priced due to the government control of liquor.

Despite being Scottish, Penderyn was the one I was going to suggest too.

As Snowshoveller says, whisky is so expensive here that your friend will be appreciative of whatever kind.

Is it?

Teachers at Sainsbury's 1 litre @ £21.79 = $35
Price at NB Liquor for 1.14 litres $34.99

Slightly more for your money in NB. I think booze is often cheaper in other provinces too.

Must be in the wrong province then - it's a bit more expensive than that in NS.

I think what we have found is that there is not so much choice here and certainly not your value Tesco option which was always fine for mixing.

We would always be appreciative of receiving a nice bottle of a brand which you just don't get here - Penderyn is lovely whisky and to my knowledge can't be bought here.

The wine is definitely more in NB than the UK now, but the exchange rate is so much worse than when I moved it looks that much more, when there's actually been little change in Canadian terms.

I do not drink, but I have worked in bars and restaurants for many years so I have a fair idea of what's popular. These were the most popular when I worked in a hotel in Aviemore.

You can get more info on them here: http://www.scotchwhisky.net/distilleries/

Macallan
Lagavulin
Laphroaig
Highland Park

Yeah the whiskey isn't terribly priced in Ontario and Ontario actually has really strict licensing laws.

Well yes, but that's The Feathers. Hardly typical for, say, anywhere else.

Here's the whisky list from Buchanan's in Calgary.

The most expensive would appear to be a 40 year old Highland Park at $225 a shot.

Well no, but if you cared about whisky and had to be in Toronto, you'd live in the Beach.
