Any tips for when the packers are in?
Hi, we have the packers in on Monday and Tuesday.
Beyond the usual keep the cups of tea flowing does anyone have any words of wisdom as to how to organise things, please? What have you found to be an effective way of separating your stuff so that they don't pack it? I have to admit I am stressing big time over this! That and the goods to follow lists of course! :scared: I will be glad when they have been and gone. :o Thanks |

Just kinda hang around and be ready to answer any questions. Pack the kettle/mugs, etc last as you have to keep the tea/coffee flowing (and have plenty of sugar as workmen always take at least 3 sugars in their tea!!!) |

Wow that's soon! When do you come?? :) Not be long now! With regard to the packers, our situation is complicated somewhat as our buyer is buying quite a bit of our stuff so obviously that can't be packed. Most things i am going to try and put in one room and shut the door, however i can't do that with everything. I was thinking of putting stickers on things. Does that sound like a plan? |
Re: Any tips for when the packers are in?
We piled everything that wasnt going in one bedroom with a big note on saying not to go. I put sticky notes on the wardrobes etc that weren't going. Moved all the kitchen stuff that wasnt going into one cupboard with big notes on saying not to go. they still went round the house asking what was going. i had provisionally packed my suitcase so i knew what clothes didnt fit in would have to go and then they wouldnt also pack the suitcase by mistake!
They were great, regular tea and the house was packed just after lunch. Dont forget to have wokred out what is going from the garage/shed and have everything clean and also take a few adaptors with you. i threw all ours out thinking we wont have uk electricals BUT stupid me forgot we were taking the computer. Make sure that all the documents/paperwork you need to take with you are in your dont take pile. I wasnt going to send birth certificates, mortgage doc etc in the container so they were safely packed in suitcase. And i fished through all the rubbish we have in drawers and packed make up etc into smaller bags so they only had to pack bags rather than putting a drawer of loose makeup into a box. Worked well Good luck with it. It was far less stressful watching them pack than I thought! the worse bit was cleaning the house when all the stuff had gone! |

Re: Any tips for when the packers are in?
Be very clear on the "do not pack" stuff and remind them every time you give them a cup of tea because they don't seem to retain the info for long :D

I am paranoid about my photo albums being lost or damaged and think I might take them in my suitcase any info gratefully recieved. thankyou in advance
One of the quotes was very different cubic feet wise from the other 2 so they were out. The other 2 said we had a similar size to ship. One was a bit cheaper than the other but one of the deciding factors was that we were offered up to 8 weeks free storage as opposed to the normal 4. We may have to use all of that. The company we have gone with is Whites and Co. So far they have been very good BUT don't forget they haven't actually packed us up yet! Lol. I will let you know how we get on. HTH. :) |
Re: Any tips for when the packers are in?
Make sure they fill the boxes up, ours left some half to a third empty and then they tried to charge us for more volume, and we had to leave stuff beihnd as they has underestimated. Plus check the inventory at the end as they write down the condition of the goods inside and this may not be correct, ie they marked an oak dresser as being scratched and gouged when it had no marks at all on it. we haev yet to get our stuff to see what condition its in.

Gosh, that's worrying Batty!
I hope your things are ok when you get them. Did you kind of hover over them so you could keep an eye on them? I don't want to get in the way and be a pain but from what you have said maybe I need to! |

Make them loads of tea etc, and chat away but keep an eye on them and get them to pack the stuff you really need to take first, we had to dump a load of stuff that i regret now, at least 5 boxes of books and that grieves me as I love my books. If they had been packed first then theres otehr stuff could have been dumped. Hope it all goes ok, I think most people have been fine with the removals, we were maybe unlucky |
Re: Any tips for when the packers are in?
Speaking of which can anyone recommend a good removal company for Oakville to Toronto. I know its a long short, but I've heard some horror stories from friends...
