Any other sources for home rental other than kijiji?
There aren't a lot of options on kijiji at the moment for the area we're looking for any I'm getting a bit nervous as we need to find something soon! It's also frustrating how many people have an ad online but don't reply... I'm presuming that means its no longer available but a reply would be helpful...
Is there anywhere else online to look for rental properties?

Have you tried placing an ad on one of the local Facebook pages?
Here in Yarmouth it is difficult to find a rental. The only places that remain available are the slums...and I wouldn't recommend them!
One suggestion is to look at properties for sale and ask whether there is any way you could rent one for a while... We did that and bought it 6 months later!

I hadn't thought of Facebook, and the properties for sale is an interesting one! Did you go direct to the seller or through the agent? Did you only contact sellers not using agents?

I have advertised my duplex vacancies on other sites before but for this area kijiji is miles better. There are quite a lot in the paper too. Maybe there's an online 'classifieds' for the area of your choice (there is here).
A vacancy I had 3 or 4 years ago is still 'up' on a different site and I can't do anything to delete it.

Find yourself a realtor... they are not like estate agents and will actually help you. We could not have found our rental or bought home without ours.

The realtors here don't seem to deal with rentals, I've only found one that has any mention of them on their website?
I'll have a look at viewit, and maybe see if there's a local magazine or something that lists rentals. Thanks

Izzie when we first got here our realtor arranged for us to live in a house that was for sale for the first 6 weeks... Not the nicest location but it was somewhere to live...
The same realtor negotiated with the seller of our house for us to rent it initially. So I would say go find a good realtor and have a chat with him/her...

Sometimes I wonder if there are students who fake interest, make appointments and either rearrange at short notice or just don't show in an attempt to waste time and then write a thesis on how long they can string along a landlord.
Last week I had a 12.00 appointment with someone on Wednesday. At 10.30 she emailed to say to change it to Thursday at 12.00. On Thursday, I had a 10.00 and then waited until 12.25. I got home to an email sent at 11.50 saying could we do it Friday at 12.00.
The reason given suggested she must have known she'd not be able to make it much earlier.
It was as if she'd realised that the 90 minutes notice was ample time for me to not waste my time so deliberately left it late.
Why do I think this?
Because she didn't show up on the Friday.
Not counting her I had three people in eight not show up.

Rentals are not something that realtors can deal with in every province. For instance in BC the MLS does not have rentals and realtors rarely get the additional license needed to deal with rentals. Pity really as it is a lot easier to find rentals when the MLS has them
In Vancouver and Victoria Craigslist is a good place to look for rentals. I guess it depends on what landlords use in each area. Local papers are a good resource too.
Warmly,
Frank

Just as a thought, as I had this problem on Kijiji when I first used it in Canada, but are you using an email address that ends in co.uk? I found that recipients were not receiving my emails, however Kijiji didn't let me know that it doesn't allow co.uk addresses, so I spent ages thinking I was being ignored!
We moved to NS about 18 months ago and it can be hard finding a place you like for a reasonable price in HRM, especially if you are looking for a rental appartment as there is competition from the many University students.
Not sure if you are looking on the Halifax or Dartmouth side, however before we moved here we very definitely wanted to live in Halifax, but ended up finding a great appartment in Dartmouth. Is it worth looking into different areas?

I'm using a .com address, I thought that would be best
re. the area, we're looking in the Annapolis Valley and are very flexible on location, we just don't want to stay in an apartment or duplex! (we moved here to get away from people lol).
We have one possible option to go look at tomorrow, it's rather small but would be manageable for the first year....

Ahh.. I see why there wouldn't be so much choice in the Annapolis Valley. I had assumed you were looking in the Halifax/Dartmouth area.
Good luck with your search - it is a lovely area
