I've been looking at the Applicant Testing exam, what is the difference between Special constable and Police? What are their salaries? What area/field do they work in?
Would they be on a par with PCSO's over here? Do they have power of arrest etc... I've had a brief search on google, and see that University of Toronto use Specials as Campus Police, and that the Toronto subway system employ specials.

Err........then having been a cop in the UK for over 12 years and not getting a penny towards my mortgage, I must be owed a fortune
new cops stopped getting housing allowance in 1994, those already getting it had their payments ring fenced, so only cops with more than 17 years service will still get, what now, is a relatively small amount

Its not money towards your mortgage, its a better rate, I think its key worker benefits.....Allows you to get cheaper mortgage rates to allow you to work in an area you cant afford to mortgage a house in......I am not sure what you call it but I am thinking key worker benefits??? Its for fire fighters etc etc And only relates to certain areas you live.

You are right. I decided to go the military route, and as a Captain now am happy with the pay (yearly increase, deployments, exercises home and abroad, playing with toys ).
To the OP...if you manage to get into one force, it might be easy to transfer to another. Guys have gone from the military to the rcmp and police. Also don't forget that the military has a police also.

On an unrelated matter, maybe one of the cops can answer a question that has been bugging me for years?
A few years we came up here on a house hunting trip, prior to posting. In the hotel where we were staying, I bumped (literally) into Gilles Duceppe. He was in the company of five rather burly men. RCMP minders, I was later told by the missus. I was struck by the fact that they were all completely bald. That is too much of a coincidence to be natural. Why would they have all shaved their heads? Any ideas?

I've known a few MPs to move over to the civvy cops. In a couple of cases, I am bound to question the efficacy of the physcological profiling techniques used during recruitment. Two of them were mentally unstable.

Most services, with the exception of a few forces, pay more or less the same. Around 80 k for a level 1 Cst, plus service pay, senior cst pay and shift dif and plain clothes pay, which can add close to another 8 k a year. Each bump in rank is around 8 - 10 k a year. Overtime is largely double time and triple on stat holidays.

In the RCMP in isolated areas or limited duration posts, Force Owned Housing is provided.

There is also the Ontario Provincial Police which provides policing services for all areas/towns/cities without police forces.
