Any nurses out there to give me some info?
 

I’m about to begin the very long process of getting my UK nurse qualification assessed. Before I start it though I want to know if my career plan is realistic i.e. does it even exist in Canada? Me and my husband are emigrating without any family or friends to meet us in Canada. Due to this I was hoping to do agency nursing where I pick and choose what shifts I want to work. Does agency nursing exist over here or am i going to struggle?

What route are you moving to Canada? Process is long and expensive. Agency nursing really isn’t a thing but there are casual and travel nursing roles. Depending on which province you are planning on working and living in will depend on job market and whether you find work

My husbands job is in demand so we are applying through the express entry route. I know the nursing process can take 10-18months so I’m happy to find casual work. Just wondering if it’s worth me even starting the process if I can’t work when I want too. We haven’t decided on province as we are looking at what job offers my husband the best salary/relocation package. Ottawa and Vancouver seem to be where his industry is most located though.

Getting feet through the door is the hardest thing as nursing is heavy with the union. Even with casual you are expected to pick up x amount of shifts in a certain timeframe. Most UK nurses are required to make up courses so expect timeframe to be longer.

I just replied on Anarids post if you want to read that, I applied to NNAS in January 2018 and am still miles away from actually registering. Through all the time looking for jobs i have never seen any agency jobs offered, a lot of casual part time but from the adverts it seems they are the one telling you when they want you not the other way round, like in the UK.

Once you are certified, you may be able to get some agency work for RN home care or similar... this kind of thing.. which might work for you. https://www.rightathomecanada.com/

Hi

my wife went through all the process NNAS, NCAS, and BCCNP. When you started NNAS did you do only for RN or LPN? I would suggest doing it for both if you are still on time. LPN is a level below of RN but it seems that it opens more doors when you arrive here and maybe you don't have to take a long and expensive course like RN (depend on your qualifications and work experience). My works while study for the Bridging program she works as Health Care Support.
