Any nurses out there?
If so, I'd appreciate a PM. I need a bit of clarification on how blood pressure works.
Thanks. |

Thanks. Physically I feel fine. I'm just curious as to the cause of the rather wild swings that take place in my BP and pulse between the waiting room and the consulting room.

Re: Any nurses out there?
Your blood pressure rises and falls naturally throughout the day, and can be affected by stress:mad:, anxiety:ohmy:, exertion:tounge_smile:, alcohol:beer: and food intake:blink:, amongst other things.
It is quite possible, as you imply in your question, thatyour anxiety is one of the underlying reasons for your blood pressure changes. Doctors on the whole are aware of this and have even dubbed the condition 'white coat syndrome' due to the anxiety provoking effect which the doctors themselves have on some people. Nice to hear everything is ticking away:thumbup: |

Thanks. 1. It is useful to measure BP in both arms above the elbows to ensure reading is accurate 2. Those gizmoes found in pharmacies are for the birds. They are not reliable. Have your pressure taken professionally by a human, not a machine. One thing I do not know but I have often wondered is this: is it a bad idea to have sex and shortly thereafter have one's pressure taken? Can someone here answer? |

Is one still allowed to write 'fags'? I thought that word was outlawed?;)

Re: Any nurses out there?
Some years ago I had a pre-employment medical with Ford. At the point where they took my blood pressure I passed out & collapsed to the floor. A combination of a heavy night before, a hot day and a stiff suit proved too much.
I still got the job though! Point is that I still don't like having my blood pressure taken and often feel a tad woozy. It's probably psychosymmatic (sp?) but happens. Souv, Keep smiling. AX |

AX Another one with white coat syndrome.:p The second reading I had yesterday reassured me that I'm not likely to croak in the next 10 minutes. If it can be that low in a surgery, it's probably even lower anywhere else. All my other tests came up with zip, except for one thing that both the doctor and pharmacist said was minor. It annoyed Souvette, though. |
