Do you know what the cost of living is compared to, say Vancouver?
It is either Toronto or Vancouver that I want to move to.

There are some nice bars and lounges in Toronto and dare I say it quite a few strip joints when comparing it to the UK cities!

It's bitterly cold when there is wind chill.
I walked down to Earl's last night (approximately a mile). My face was so frozen when I got to the bar the poor girl was really struggling to take my order and my mouth muscles (usually incredibly strong) were not moving in the right directions.

Financial Services? Canada's banking system is generally regarded as the best in the world - it's ranked #1 by the World Economic Forum. Is Canada's aerospace industry 2-10 years behind the UK? Biotechnology? Canada is a world leader in bio-agriculture. Oil industry? Chemical industry? Software Development? Renewable Energy? Life Sciences? Pharmaceuticals? Plastics? Automotive? Canada is also consistently ranked ahead of the UK in education.

Toronto is a lot bigger so I'd say you have a better chance of finding something affordable that still has decent transportation links to downtown.

I've been offered a post in Toronto as a Programmer. Thinking of taking it as money is amazing.
Can you own a dog in Toronto or is it not feasible? Specifically queens street west?

We take our dogs here when we go for a snack or a coffee. There is also a dog training/info centre there.

Wow thank you, she's a husky so she'll need a good hour exercise in the morning and evening. I saw theres a park near QSW. Is it a nice park or full of drunks?

Do you mean the new park on the waterfront? If so it's quite small. There's a small grassed area just in front of the CN Tower...by the Steam Whistle Brewery which is used by dog owners but they are mostly smaller dogs. I have two small dogs and when I'm in T.O. I take them walking by the lake and harbour front. You must keep your dog on a lead and you must clean up after your dog where ever you take her.

To the original poster looking for child friendly neighbourhoods that offer him an easy commute - I would look along the lakeshore GO transit line - has a more regular service than the other GO train services and even runs a reduced service out of rush hour times and at weekends. This runs from Oshawa in the East to Hamilton in the West.
We were faced with the same proplem when we got here - both of us were working downtown (University and College) but had two kids from a mid cheshire town who found the city unnerving. We went for Oakville which I still think was a great choice - but there are other options out there too.
