Alberta driving license
 

Dear All,

If a person having a driving license from india of 2 yrs old.Can he directly give a road test in alberta or he have to go by all the procedure like knowledge test then take a learner license for one year then take a road test

Anyone from alberta can you plz highlight on this issue

The best thing for you to do would be to get an International Driver's Permit (IDP) before you come to Alberta. In theory, the combination of your Indian driver's licence and your IDP allows you to drive in a foreign country for 12 months. However, if you are a resident of Alberta as opposed to a tourist (for example, if you enter on a temporary work permit), you are obliged to get an Alberta driver's licence within 90 days.

You have to do a knowledge test and a practical driving test in order to get an Alberta driver's licence. But, if you have an Indian driver's licence and an IDP, you don't have to get a learner's licence.

I believe it's very helpful to get a couple of driving lessons before you do a practical driving test, even if you're an experienced driver. The instructor will point out any bad habits you may have fallen into, and he/she will remind you of Alberta-specific rules of the road.

Edited to add this correction. If the writing on your Indian driver's licence is in English (or if one of the languages in which it is written is English), you don't need an International Driving Permit. An IDP is necessary only when the writing on a driver's licence is neither English nor French.
