I agree, Johnston Canyon is lovely although tends to draw the crowds in the summer. Grotto Canyon (near Exshaw on the 1A) is nice - you get to walk along the frozen creek in the winter. Heart Creek Trail (on Hway 1 just before Canmore) is nice too - lots of little wooden bridges criss-crossing the creek as you go. We also like Grassi Lakes Trail just outside Canmore (just past the Nordic Centre) - two alternatives routes to go although one (the better) is closed off in winter. I know someone else mentioned Elbow Falls - lovely place to spend an afternoon with a picnic. Also, just a little further along from Elbow Falls is Forget-me-not Pond - another lovely place for a lazy afternoon. Another nice place a bit nearer to Calgary is Big Hill Springs Provincial Park (signposted from the 1A). It might not have the same wow factor as some of above but it's a nice little trek - lots of little waterfalls along a stream.

If you only want an hours drive, a lot of the possibilities will depend on where you live in the city - it can take over half an hour just to drive across the city, if the traffic is bad, more than an hour.
So you would want to consider different locations depending on whether you were in the NW or the SE for example... Having said that, we live in the NW, and often visit places like Big Hill Springs and go for a walk and a picnic (about a 20 minute drive from where we live), and yesterday, Mr Chookie and I went over to Kananaskis, had a quick walk (deep snow, very cold! but fun pelting each other with snowballs...). It took us just over an hour (as in only a few minutes over) to get there. We go over there quite often in the summer and do longer walks, but fancied seeing what it was like in winter. |

Depending on ages of kids, consider buying annual passes for places likethe Zoo and Calaway Park, etc. It saves lots of long days cramming everything in, and you can just "pop in and out" as you fancy, perhaps just spending the odd morning or afternoon as desired. Very young kids love the zoo.
And keep an eye out for Early Bird Specials on these passes which offer considerable savings. |
