Advice Wanted - Arranging Accommodation from the UK
 

Hi All,

We are currently awaiting medical requests for our permanent residency application for Canada. We will have a 7 month and a 3 year old when we go (providing all goes well with our application ofcourse) and so we hope to be able to arrange accommodation from back here in the UK before we go.

Does anyone have any experience of this they could share with us?

Or any advice on how to go about it, i know went renting houses over here you normally have to under go credit checks and provide references which we obviously wont be able to do but im hoping/thinking that they allow for these problems when taking on families under going emigration?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Which province are you heading for?

Some people have rented places from the UK but I personally would be wary of doing it as i would want to see the place first and to meet the landlord so i know if they are OK or not!

Have you thought about staying in a motel for a week or 2 when you arrive or some people rent out their basement suites for a week at a time. I think this would be the way we will do it once we move. Unless you have people you trust over there to look around places for you?

Depending on where you are heading, i may know a couple of people that can help with short term (weekly) rentals, otherwise i would google rental property in (enter area name).

Need more info as your location is key.
For the most part though, it's easy enough to rent a place in Canada.
If you can provide 2 months rent and you seem trustworthy there should be no hassle.
Accomodation with a Kitchenete is a good idea for a week or monthly rental as the eating out costs money.
It will also give you a chance to take your time on renting a digs.

Hi,

My partner and I arranged short term accomodation from the UK before we left for Vancouver.

We used Craigslist as they advertise for short term/holiday rentals, you might get lucky like us as they guy we let from picked us up from the airport and gave us a tour of the local areas etc. From there we were able to go out and view potential apartments - we were then able to supply a reference from the guy we rented the short term appt from and we weren't credit checked either.

We used the services of a local realtor who specialises in people moving over from the UK. She arranged short term accommodation for us whilst we sorted ourselves out etc. We in fact have a rental suite that we rent out, usually to people over on recces or when they first make the move whilst they look around at suitable long term rentals/purchase etc. I'm not sure what part of the country you're hoping to move to but, wherever, I'm sure there are similar places available. It gives you the freedom to have somewhere to stay whilst you look around at properties in person without agreeing to rent something for say 6 months or a year from the UK without actually seeing it personally.

We moved in September and weren't expecting our container for a while so we rented a holiday condo (fully furnished). Because it was the 'off season' they rented it monthly to us really cheap. We stayed there for 3 months while we explored the area and chose where to buy our house. There are lots of people who rent out their holiday homes (google VRBO - Vacation rental by owner) long term for the off season if that happens to be when you arrive.

We're moving to the Oakville/Burlington area in Ontario. We were recommended a broker who has a lot of knowledge in the area and met up with her when we did a recce in May. She took us to see loads of houses for rent and to buy and she built up a picture of what we were looking for.

We're due to fly out in 2 weeks and have a rental for a year. We've only seen pictures of it but trust her judgment as she rejected loads of places before telling us about this one.

If you can find someone like that then it really puts your mind at rest. Of course, if you're looking around Burlington/Oakville then I'm more than happy to pass on her details. She's brilliant and we trust her completely!

I would book the Holiday Inn Staybridge Suite (or similar) in Oakville for two weeks - the place is homely and you can treat it as your own, you should be able to organise rental accomodation in that time
