Advice re dog Manchester - toronto please?
HI everyone
I know info has probably been posted before but i was looking for up to date info really. Hubby and i (and 2 kids) are landing in toronto hopefully june. We have a much loved family dog (collie x) and need advice/recommendations for transporting him. In an ideal world we need him picking up fom home (45 mins from manchester) and taking to the airport etc while we sort ourselves out with the kids. Then at toronto we would ideally like him to be picked up and delivered to cambridge - about 45 mins away - the humans are planning on taking a taxi as neither me nor hubby want to risk the lives of all of us by driving an unfamiliar automatic on the wrong side of the road and in busy traffic after a long flight! BUT the ideal world never happens! What experiences has anyone had of taking pets and how did they do it - can anyone recommend a co that would do this or give any advice? I did think that maybe we could pick him up from cargo at toronto but then what happens with the taxi situation - do they take dogs? So many questions sorry!
If anyone can come up with some useful advice etc i would certainly appreciate it - just thinking about sorting this is giving me more of a headache than the rest of the move put together!

We are going to take our Lab to Canada in the summer. At first we looked at the option of cruising across on the Queen Mary, to New York (6 days) which does have kennels. When we looked into this further, all the kennel spaces were booked and although we could go on a waiting list, we could not guarantee passage for the dog...so decided that was not for us.
I then got quotes from Ladyhaye and Airpets, but they came in at £1600 plus and that was for us to collect from Toronto ourselves on her arrival.
I then contacted Air Canada Cargo and found out that the cost of the flight for her, which was based on combined weight of dog and kennel and dimensions of kennel (which you need to buy yourself), was £810. The cost of the family flights plus the dog came to £3500 ish with Air Canada. So we are planning to send the dog ourselves by Air Canada Cargo and we will get a Canadian Affair one way flight for the 4 of us which should take off and land within half an hour of the dogs flight. That way the dog and us should be able to get there for around £1800 total. The kennel cos me £142 for my dog. Kennels have to be IATA approved but there are loads of stockists out there. We used www.john-humphris.com.
We have arranged that friends will come to Toronto in 2 vehicles (one a pickup type) to collect us and the dog in her kennel. We will pay the Gas etc. The vehicles you hire are just not big enough in our case and one way hires are more expensive. We are going to Windsor Ontario, which is about a 3.5 hr drive from Toronto.
I hear what you are saying about Kids and the dog......but for us, the other options were just way too expensive. All your dog will need is to be micro-chipped, have a Rabies Vaccine and innoculations up to date.....all recorded on the innoculation record. A few days before flying, you will need to take the dog to the vet for them to check it over and issue a Fit to fly certificate.
You will further add to the expense if you want to make arrangements for the dog to be collected from Toronto and delivered to Cambridge. I fully appreciate that it is another thing to get your head round, but I have put mind to task and it is not nearly as frightening as I first thought.
You could always arrange for friends here to take your dog to the Airport a couple of days later and book it onto a flight, then you meet it once you are there and have a vehicle and have settled a bit.
Totally your call

The dog has had all his vaccinations, rabies, micro chipped etc so no worries there. Funny how it seems easier to sort the kids out than it does to sort the dog! Oh well, we will laugh about it..... eventually

Just look at any of the bigger airlines who fly out of Manchester and contact their Cargo section. I know Canadian Affair do not fly pets due to seasonal restrictions. I don't think sending the dog off with strangers will relieve your stress much anyhow, and why pay way over the odds and still have the worry of it all....coz if your dog is loved half as much as our dog...you WILL still stress over it I have no doubts. At least doing it yourself, you limit the variables of what can go wrong, and you are not paying a 'middle man' for the priviledge. I know that my dog will be heaps happier only seeing us before she goes and us as soon as she arrives for that bit of comfort and reassurance.
A member of the family she is.......have you thought about hubby flying with the dog and you going with the kids...another option?
Good luck whatever you do decide....but do explore all the avenues as you could save yourself a lot of money.

Hiya thanks for that - ive had a couple of quotes that are in the £1800 region but they seemed to include a days kennelling and other things. to be honest i would pay it if we had too - im just looking for the 'least stress' solution. As we are flying out of manchester - i dont think air canada fly out of manchester do they? We will be flying with canadian affair (thomas cook).

C A must use planes from Manchester which have the temperature controlled holds then....and so they should. That would make life a whole lot easier to have the dog on the same flight.
Maybe we will look at flying out of Manchester instead of Heathrow. Thanks for the heads up

wish i could remember that telephone number for thomas cook cargo I rang it just about the time that air transaat (through canadian affair) stopped flying out of manchester because i had spoken to the cargo guys at air transaat and they gave me the number for thomas cook cargo. Anyway he said that there were no seasonal restrictions as the planes they sent out of manchester were all temperature controlled cargo holds and not to worry about it (i seem to think it was about october and we didnt know if we would be flying over xmas which is why i was asking about the temp in the holds as i had heard this could cause problems) - anyway thats how i know they def fly out of manchester to toronto no matter what time of year

Just phoned Manchester Canadian Affair Cargo....they do fly pets, but you have to go through an Animal Freight Forwarder, which are the companies who we have both looked into.....at double the cost. They do not deal direct with members of the public for animals, so you can't do it yourself with them.

We used airpets and they collected the dogs (3) from my parents (Lincs to London), boarded the dogs for 2 days then flew them out with all paperwork and we collected them at this end. We did it this way so the dogs arrived once we had arrived and signed for our house and had somewhere for them. Paid approx £1000 per dog (3 in total) included board, vet check, flights and kennels and for us was well worth the money and piece of mind. Only thing outstanding for us was custom fees here in Canada that we had to pay to collect the dogs as well as the custom inspection fees which I can't remember how much we paid.

I did think that maybe we could pick him up from cargo at toronto but then what happens with the taxi situation - do they take dogs? So many questions sorry!
If anyone can come up with some useful advice etc i would certainly appreciate it - just thinking about sorting this is giving me more of a headache than the rest of the move put together!

I know info has probably been posted before but i was looking for up to date info really. Hubby and i (and 2 kids) are landing in toronto hopefully june. We have a much loved family dog (collie x) and need advice/recommendations for transporting him. In an ideal world we need him picking up fom home (45 mins from manchester) and taking to the airport etc while we sort ourselves out with the kids. Then at toronto we would ideally like him to be picked up and delivered to cambridge - about 45 mins away - the humans are planning on taking a taxi as neither me nor hubby want to risk the lives of all of us by driving an unfamiliar automatic on the wrong side of the road and in busy traffic after a long flight! BUT the ideal world never happens! What experiences has anyone had of taking pets and how did they do it - can anyone recommend a co that would do this or give any advice?
