Advice for my son working in Alberta
 

Hi,

I have recently had an LMO accepted to work in edmonton, my son who is 19 is coming with me and can also get a job working with the same company as me.

The question is what visa should my son initially travel with me to Canada with?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

1. The usual, it depends. If your job is in NOC O, A, or B a skilled occupation and he is between 18-22 and dependent, he can apply for a TWP on entry. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resourc...2010/ob122.asp (assuming it is a job that doesn't require a medical.)

Thanks PMM, I have been trying everywhere to find out information about this. Do you know if there are any costs involved or any paperwork for him to do before we fly out?

Unless he needs a medical the I believe the only cost would be for the twp (a little bird tells me its around $150) - not sure if you print off the forms from the CIC site or they give you them at the border when he applies - if you can do it before it would be better then all you have to do is hand it over when you fly in.

I'll have a look at the immigration forum, lots of people get 'TWP's' at the border - give me a second to find out :)

Looks like they must have all the forms there when you fly in for him to fill in. I would suggest as long as he has his birth certificate proving he is your son / passport (obviously lol) he can apply right there and then when you get yours :thumbup:

Also, can anybody tell me how stringent they are at the border when they give me the work permit? For me and my son? Is it straight forward or do they grill you with questions?
Any help or advice upon my arrival in Canada would be much apprecaited

They'll be as stringent as they feel is necessary to determine your right to have one issued, is the obvious answer.

My experience was a 2 hour interview, followed by another hour's wait for paperwork to be processed. I didn't apply under LMO though.

I hope my case will be different, don't fancy a 2 hour interview after a 9 hour flight! I do have an approved LMO so hopefully I will be quicker than that!
Is there anything I can or should prepare for?

Be prepared for the worst - have all your documents and paperwork in order and answer honestly. The process is what it is, you can't second guess what might happen.

I flagpoled around the border to get my TWP issued, and it took most of the day (plus a 7 hr round trip car journey), after US immigration decided to go through a formal refusal of entry process.

Many moons ago, (I came in although did already have an open work permit as had got it before we came in) I remember being as apprehensive as you. Thoughts of rubber gloves and manly looking female officers if you know what I mean ;) and I was terrified.

Although I have to say - don't be scared, as long as you aren't smuggling drugs / arms or rabid dogs into the country they will (as RICH said) be efficient, ask what needs to be asked, hand over the paperwork (hopefully ;)) and you'll be on your way to your new life.

Just be prepared and polite. Have your job offer, copy of LMO, qualifications to show that you are the right man for the job, your sons paperwork (as outlined above) and a big smile (but not a cocky one ;)) and you will be just fine!

Sometimes a 2 hr wait to be seen can calm the nerves no end anyway :)

Hi Guys,

Im more apprehensive that Im going into a new industry in Canada which does not show my professional history. The company want me to work in a similar enviroment but not what Ive been doing all my working life. I dont have qualifications just very good references from my previous employers, as Im good a what I do(big head)lol.
Will my references, good resume, LMO and a polite smile be good enough?
The HR guy says it is straight forward but nothing ever goes smoothly in my eyes! Heres hoping!

You must be dam good at what you do to have an LMO for a job you've never done before lol!

But I suppose if HRSDC are happy that you are the one for the job (presumably you gave your employer these references etc so they could prove why you were the man for the job) then I can't see why a bso wouldn't be.

You should be fine - hopefully Former Lancastrian (YOOHOO waves at FL) will be along to maybe shed a bit of light on the enemies side of the fence ;)

(Just a joke, FL is a BSO)

Try not to worry too much.

We applied for TWP and my Spousal open work permit at point of entry a couple of weeks ago.

It went very smoothly - nothing untoward asked. She did ask if either of us had ever been arrested (we haven't). She was very thorough and very serious but not intimidating.

The customs guys were pretty laid back about goods to follow lists etc :)

I have to admit I was very nervous at getting it at POE but it was fine. :)
