Advice about PR renewal

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone can advise me about how to complete the application for renewing your PR card. :fingerscrossed:

I became a PR at the tail end of 2011 and received my intail PR card no problem. Now i would like to change it to my married name. The form asks that you include form IM 1000 and IM 5292 OR IM 5688.

I do not have any of these, the only thing I have to prove status is my PR card. I was wondering maybe rules changed or something and when you get PR you dont receive these forms anymore? I was going to include a copy of the front/back of my PR card in the application but dont want it rejected and returned to me.

I have kept everything from the immigration process and im 100% sure i never recieved these forms! Anyone who can shed any light on this?

Thanks in advance!

Immigrant Visa and Record of Landing (IMM 1000)

Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688) Isn't this the white piece of paper stapled into your passport? You can get a duplicate, at a price of course.

Is the other just the visa in your passport??

Thanks for your reply. I really dont know what they are. When i landed the Immigration officer stapled a sheet into my passport but he told me that when i received my PR card i was to remove and destroy it. So i hope thats not it!

I know usually people who are renewing have had their pr cards for at least 5 years so was hoping you no longer needed a copy of these forms. Wishful thinking maybe?

You need the form that was in the passport. We lost ours too, removed at passport renewal grrrr! We think :@/.

$30 for a copy and took 3 months. That was this year.

I've checked the instructions for renewal and you don't need either of these. You need

Two (2) secondary identity documents

A copy of two of the following:

your Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688)
or
your valid provincial driver’s license or valid provincial photo-identity card
or
your valid University/College photo student card
or
your most recently issued Income Tax assessment issued by the Canada Revenue Agency

To change your name you only need the paper that was in your passport. You can get a new one.

Read bats' post more carefully. You need two of the listed documents, e.g. a copy of your driving license and a copy of your latest Tax Assessment.

I did read it, i dont have a license. It also says you can use a provicial identity card, which in Ontario takes 4 weeks to arrive. I think i will apply for the identity card as it will come quicker and will let me send my application for PR renewal sooner. I will send away for a replacement IM 1000 too as I dare say I will need it at some point in the future.

You will when you come to claim your pension.

I think you need it to apply for citizenship too? I was told to NOT remove it from my passport for this very reason

Re: Advice about PR renewal

As others have said the Record of Landing and / or COPR are things you should keep safe as you will need them if you a) apply for citizenship and b) want to claim a pension (found this amusing when told it at the oath ceremony - so I need to keep this bit of paper for about 30+ years, can't they just cross reference things against my immigration file, which I assume will still be around then?)

When I got PR they never told me to be careful what I did with the COPR, and it was just some niggling feeling that made me put it somewhere safe. They could at least put something on the form like "KEEP IN A SAFE PLACE - This form will be needed if you wish to apply for Citizenship or Canadian Pension"

Do you still need it if you are a Citizen? It came as a shock to us that we needed it for Citizenship - much turning upside down of drawers but we found them - far from sure that we kept them after we got Citizenship, maybe we did. I feel another frantic search coming on.

At the moment it is ne of the required documents when you apply for Old Age Security. You can get an official copy so if you can't find it any more it might be an idea to apply for the duplicate now.
