accountant specialising in UK-Canada affairs
Apologies if this topic has been done to death, however am becoming more and more unstuck with everything.
basically have property in UK, and foolishly only recently filled out NRL1 form.
was in Canada all of 2008, however the HMRC have only backdated the NRL1 until jan 2009.
so, now since the agency have got wind of the fact that i was out of the country in 2008, they say i need to pay tax on rental income in uk.
thing is, if hmrc will only backdate to jan 09, does that not mean that as far as they are concerned i was still resident for tax purposes in the UK in 2008, therefore any taxes should be dealt with on a uk tax return?
all v. confusing, hence the need of an accountant who knows the score.
any thoughts most welcome
thanks

I've found that normally only the large firms, who have offices in both Countries, are the ones who can offer this type of advice.
But possibly a recently emigrated British Accountant who has re-qualified for Canada may be able to help you at less cost.

JonboyE is a British accountant who requalified in Canada and who is easily accessible via the private message mechanism. Perhaps he'd like some work

The OP needs to file a UK tax return for 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. This tax return will be for UK source income only for the period he was non resident in the UK. He will not need to file tax returns from 2009/2010 unless:
a) His profit on the rental exceeds his personal allowance or
b) HMRC asks him to.
That will be 50 guineas please.
