Accommodation in PEI

Hi,

My wife, 2 kids and I are visiting PEI and in particular Charlottetown from 28 Oct to 3 Nov 07, with a view to emigrating late '08 early '09.
We are trying to find somewhere reasonable to stay for the week, ideally a room or rooms, kitchen would be good, but must have 1 double and 2 single beds, and be clean and comfortable. Has anybody got any ideas?

Well your times are not the best time of the year to see PEI, alot of the touristy things will be closed. You could possible get some good deals on accomadations though. Check out this site and way down in the left hand cornor you will see a place to order your free PEI tourist guide....that will have all the info you need...

We used the above link to book ours.

Use the read the text then use the begin your search link.

Then make sure you select each tab in turn before you hit search...bit of an idiots guide sorry but it can be easily missed.....like we did

Were staying here.

http://www.thesuite.ca/

Did us a good deal so drop them a line and as the other poster has said with it being out of season you should get some good prices.

Quite funny tho. When I spoke to a realtor who called me (lovely guy I can provide his contact details if you wanna meet him for a chat) last week, He asked where we were staying ...He said thats my first cousins place.

When I told him which companies I was visiting he said He was my nextdoor neighbour for 30yrs and the other fella is my Brother in law....

Many thanks for the info, we have visited the pei tourist website previously, a personal recomendation is always appreciated.

Davie_Mac, when are you thinking of emigrating, and is PEI your location of choice?

Any advice on emigrating to PEI will be gratefully received.

The following was the answers I recieved from a list of questions I sent to a couple in PEI. SORRY can't remember the exact questions but you should prob get the gist of it from the answers:

1..Crime rate...very low ,worst are for petty crime Summerside.
2.Re-max Charlottetown office Great guy..Aldo DeBacco.
3.Cornwall area ok but lots of nice areas within easy drive if you want a home with a water view.
Log onto.MLS.CA you can then search the whole island for homes prices locations etc.
4.Summerside .avoid prices cheap but lots of house break ins etc.
5.Dont know much about the company.
6.Re-OH.. she may have to attend night classes to get a certificate in admin the she could apply for admin posts in hospitals...dr.s office. insurance etc. although there are lots of summer jobs available which will bring in some money as she attends classes.
7.Cost of living:Petrol.....94 cents/litre =50p.
Elect....$86per month = 43 gbp..(4 bed house)
Heating oil...77cent /liter =40p.
Propane......As oil
Car....2 yr old good make and condition.14,00cd.
Car insurance..1300 fully comp. (uk no claims not
accepted.).......................................I'm sure you CAN use No-Claims
Joe.......no driving test needed swap uk for island.
Food....... Meats ..steak/ pork beef / cheap
Fish ...lobster/prawns.etc all cheap
Plastic cheese ..cheap /good mature
cheddar..expensive.
Wine.......about the same /beer cheap.
Dog food... about the same.
8. Wages below average but then house pices very cheap compared with uk.
9.Yes .............first class.
10.Beaches.fantastic never more than 30 mins from coast wherever you live on island.
11.Seasons.. Spring starts mid May ...mild
Summer.......mid June..Hot''
Fall.............mid Sept...mild.
Winter.........end Oct....Brrrrr cold
Snow .....Snow... temps 0 ...-36
Wind chill ekkkk freezing.
And with all the above there is always
Sunshine. The island has at least 4 atlantic storms in the winter with winds of 100 Klms but guess what.the roads are always clear and life goes on.
12. We find life great here......go back to the uk in the 60's and there you have it a nice slow pace stress free.People are really nice and love to chat.
I guess the ''have a nice day routine grinds at first but you get used to it.Its so much more enjoyable than the uk where you wait in line at the cash till and the staff almost ignore you..here they know who pays there wages and all the stores have well trained and pleasant staff.

That's ok for us, we currently live in Northern Ireland, so with out wanting to upset anyone, it isn't too different. Pretty much what we're used to, and we like it, it gives a nice sense of community which can be lacking in some areas.

Re: Accommodation in PEI

Hi Vee

Many thanks for reading and posting, any and all info will be greatly received.

My OH is looking for employment within the aerospace sector, and would be called an 'engineer' in the uk, but I guess would be classed as a technician in canada, as he has a HNC not a degree. His C.V. is with Atlantic Turbines, is it worth arranging a meeting for when we are over?

We haven't yet found any suitable accommodation, not many people are answering their e-mails(!), and to be honest the prices seem to be quite expensive.

What's like living in summerside? Do you have kids? How was the summer? and loads of other questions.....

Thanks again,

Mel

Re: Accommodation in PEI

hi Mel
guess what my partner works for Atlantic Turbines!!!!!!!!!
from the uk he sent his resume phoned but no success!
then last september we came on holiday on arrival partner phoned them and asked if he could come and visit the place ,had an appointment and ....was offered a position they arranged for us to come here through the provincial nominee program
definetly worse for you to do the same

have you thought of staying in a motel?not that great but as you'll be here off season(end of october?)they could reduce price
if you are interested in doing so in Summerside let me know i could go and ask a few.

summer here was veryb hot and humide
because of baby born end of june i have not really been to many places but lots of things to do during the summer lots of tourist plus very family orrientated here

how old are your children?
there is a family place which runs groups for mums /baby/toddler nice to have somewhere to meet other mum

Re: Accommodation in PEI

Vee,

Thanks for the posts. We were only planning to stay in Charlottetown, but have changed our minds, so we will no doubt be staying in the Sumerside area at some stage, so if you can recommend any where decent that would be great.
I have 2 kids, boy 13 and girl 9, so a big difference to your little one.
My husband is aware of the other aviation employers on PEI, and they should all have his C.V., but he will write to them all again and try to arrange a visit for when we are over. The problem is that we are not looking to emigrate until late next year, as his current contract doesn't expire until Feb 09, but we may be able to move a little earlier. Hopefully it will all work out.
Once again any advice would be fab.

Re: Accommodation in PEI

Vee,

Chances are we will be wanting somewhere to stay in Summerside area for latter half of the week, so probably night of 31 Oct leave morning of 3 Nov. If you can find out some details and let us know that would be great.
OH just sent off paperwork to EC UK to get his HNC recognised under the Sydney Accord, hopefully this will make job hunting/employability easier.

Thanks again,

Re: Accommodation in PEI

Hi
i phoned a few motel in Summerside

one will cost 255.35$ for 2 adults 2 children for 3 nights with a little kitchen

one will be 175$ but no kitchen in the room just fridge and microwave

the last one will be 150$ again fridge and microwave but with this one you'll have to pay cash (as they do not used cards for only a few days in November as it would cost them too much)

for all of them tax is included
if you are interested you'll need to phone then and give them your card detail they won't take any money before you get here

let me know if you are interested so i could pass on details
if not would you prefer other kind of accomodation?
